DES MOINES, Iowa – Freshman Sanjana Bidarkal reached the semifinals in flight C while Nina Barudzic won flight D’s consolation championship at the Drake Fall Invitational held this past weekend.
Bidarkal topped Northern Iowa’s Sydeny Wolfe (6-0, 6-0) and Northern Colorado’s Marissa Baca (6-3, 7-6 (4)) before losing in the semis to eventual the flight champion, Adrienne Jensen of Drake, in two sets (6-1, 6-0).
Barudzic bounced back from a 7-5, 2-6, 10-4 loss to Ashley Monaco of Creighton in the opening round of flight D. She would top Upper Iowa’s (UIU) Morgan Winnie (6-0, 6-2), Omaha’s Madeline Holscher (6-2, 6-0) and Creighton’s Simone Hussussian (8-2) to take the consolation title.
Alica Scott (flight B), Rymma Maslova (B), Yamini Reddy (D) and Dragana Brankovic (A) each recorded one win during their tournament runs.
In doubles, each of the Coyotes’ four teams won at least one match with the team of Reddy and Scott reaching the flight B consolation finals. The duo lost their opening match to Omaha’s Allison Johnson and Molly Matricardi (8-0), and then topped UIU’s Saki Kawabata and Anna Okolot (8-5). They defeated Creighton’s Natalie Miller and Karlin Naslund 8-6 in their final match of the tournament, as the consolation final with Hussussian and Monaco was not contested.
Bidarkal teamed up with Omaha’s Rachel Skolaski to reach the flight B consolation semis. That duo lost 8-1 to Mela Jaglarz and Lea Kozulic of Drake to open. They followed with an 8-6 win over UIU’s Julia Prokopynshyn and Winnie before dropping to Hussussian and Monaco, 8-2.
The Coyotes will travel to the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis on Friday.
