MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman Sanjana Bidarkal won the Minneapolis Flight while senior Yamini Reddy won the St. Paul Flight as South Dakota tennis competed at the Gopher Invitational this past weekend.
Bidarkal, who has a 6-1 record after two tournaments this fall, started her run by sweeping Northern Iowa’s Sydney Wolfe (6-2, 6-3), then dropped Kate Lanier of Kentucky in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8)). Her final match of the tournament was a 6-2, 6-4 sweep of UW-Milwaukee’s Christina Colarossi in the semis. She was awarded the Minneapolis Flight’s title by default over UNI’s Gisele Kemper.
Reddy started off the St. Paul Flight by topping North Dakota’s Aliza Deming (6-1, 6-1). She followed up by beating UNI’s Savanna Hunt (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9)) and UW-Milwaukee’s Hayley Marshall in the championship (6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (4)).
Teammate Nina Barudzic placed third in the St. Paul Flight. She swept Maria Laura Velazco of SDSU (7-6 (4), 6-2) before losing to Marshall in the semifinals (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10). She was awarded third place by default over Northern Illinois’ Maria Rozo.
South Dakota will compete at the UNI Invitational this weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa. That tournament will start on Friday and ends on Sunday.
