CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Nina Barudzic and Sanjana Bidarkal teamed up to win the Panther Doubles Flight while the duo of Dragana Brankovic and Rymma Maslova placed second in the Gold Doubles Flight at the UNI Invitational held this past weekend. The tournament started on Friday and ended on Sunday.
Bidarkal and Barudzic won each match by a score of 8-4. They topped Morgan Winnie and Julia Prokopyshyn of Upper Iowa in the first round before beating a combo team of USD's Yamini Reddy and Bradley's Cassia Wojtalik in the semifinals. They took down Bradley's Liz Przystawski and Aimee Manfredo in the finals.
Brankovic and Maslova started the run to their runner-up finish with an 8-6 victory over UIU's Kelly Jachymowski and Yamit Vodavoz before following up with an 8-5 win over Illinois State's Kadi Ilves and Chanel Scudiero in the semifinals. The duo dropped the championship match 8-4 to Bradley's Ashley Thai and Alexa Brandt.
Barudzic and Reddy were the top USD finishers in singles play by both placing third in the Panther Singles Flight. Both players recorded sweeps in the first round, with Barudzic topping Western Illinois' Nicole Jones 6-4, 6-2 and Reddy beating Illinois State's Natalia Parchowska, 6-0, 7-5.
Barudzic swept Emily Mone of St. Catherine (6-4, 6-3) in the second round before losing to flight champion Scudiero (6-1, 6-2) in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Reddy topped Alicia Knoll of St. Catherine (3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4)) in the second round before being swept by UNI's Sydney Wolfe (6-0, 7-6 (7-2)). Barudzic and Reddy did not play a third-place match.
Maslova finished fourth in the Gold Singles Flight. She swept Vodavoz in the opening round (6-0, 6-2) and topped Bradley's Ari Dechter (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) before losing to UNI's Elvira Lopez in the semis (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8)). Ilves swept Maslova 6-1, 6-1 in the third-place match.
The Coyotes will wrap up their fall season by hosting the USD Coyote Invitational next weekend. That tournament will last from Friday to Sunday.
