FORT WAYNE, Ind.—South Dakota senior guard Tyler Larson scored a team-high 14 points and made two free throws with 3.8 seconds left to lead the Coyotes to a 64-62 win against Fort Wayne Saturday at Gates Sports Center.
South Dakota (8-9, 2-1 Summit) has won five of its last six and improved to 5-4 on the road. Included in the road record are wins against the two preseason Summit League favorites in Denver and Fort Wayne. The Coyotes return to Vermillion to host North Dakota State Wednesday for a chance at first place in the league standings.
Larson's first 12 points were scored in the first half. His two late free throws gave USD a 63-60 lead.
South Dakota intentionally fouled Mo Evans with 1.7 seconds left and he made them both – the second one accidentally – to close the gap to 63-62.
Coyote guard Brandon Bos was fouled with 1.4 seconds left. He made the first to make it 64-62 and missed the second, leaving Fort Wayne's Steve Forbes with a full-court heave that missed the mark.
Bos had eight points, giving him 1,001 during his four-year career. He is the 44th player in Coyote history to eclipse 1,000 points.
Casey Kasperbauer scored 11 points and James Hunter added 10 for South Dakota. Kasperbauer's third 3-pointer of the game gave USD a 57-56 lead with three minutes to go. Trey Norris hit a long-range jumper with 1:24 to go that gave the Coyotes the lead for good at 61-59. Norris had eight points and three assists.
Forbes led all scorers with 24 points on 11 of 13 shooting. He also had eight rebounds. Evans added 16 points for the Mastodons (8-9, 1-3).
The game had 10 ties and 10 lead changes and the largest lead in the second half was four points. The Coyotes led 33-32 at the break. Both teams shot close to 50 percent from the field.
