BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota State erased a 20-0 deficit and pulled away in the second half for a 71-57 win against South Dakota Saturday at Frost Arena.It was the fourth win in a row for the Jackrabbits (13-7, 4-2 Summit) while South Dakota (9-10, 3-2) had its win streak stop at three.
It was the 211th meeting between the two programs. South Dakota State has won the last four in the series and the last eight at Frost Arena.
Reed Tellinghuisen and Cody Parks scored 15 points each to lead the Jacks, which overcame a 0-for-8 start from the field to shoot 44 percent for the game. Jacks point guard George Marshall scored all 12 of his points in the final 10 minutes. His 3-pointer gave SDSU the lead for good, 45-44, and sparked a 25-6 run that put the game away.
Brandon Bos had 18 points to lead South Dakota, which made eight of its first 13 shots en route to its 20-point advantage. The Coyotes made 11 of 43 from the field after the initial burst and finished the game at 34 percent.
Tyler Larson notched his ninth double-double of the season for South Dakota. He had 12 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high tying six assists. James Hunter added 10 points and five rebounds for the Coyotes.
After South Dakota's first 20 points, State scored the next 18 and 28 of the game's next 30 points to take a 28-22 lead. Tellinghuise hit two three's and scored eight points during the rally. He had 11 points in the first half and the Jacks led 31-29 at the break.
A three-pointer by Larson gave the Coyotes a 41-38 lead with 12:23 to go and Hunter's three-point play made it 44-42 South Dakota near the midway point. Marshall countered with a triple on the next possession and the Jacks took control of the game from there.
Marshall, the Jacks' leading scorer heading into the game, missed his first five shots, but made four of the next five he took including two triples. Parks and Jake Bittle scored six points each during the final 10 minutes. SDSU made 9 of 15 shots in the final 10 minutes while USD made 4 of 11.
For South Dakota, it was the start of a three-game road trip. The Coyotes travel to Western Illinois (Thurs.) and IUPUI (Sat.) next week before playing seven of their final 10 regular season games at home. South Dakota has played six times at home in 19 games this season.
