VERMILLION, S.D.—Omaha senior guard C.J. Carter scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the final 14 minutes to lead the Mavericks to an 86-77 win against South Dakota Friday inside the DakotaDome in the Summit League opener for both teams.
Omaha (7-6, 1-0 Summit) picked up its second road win of the season and has won three of its last four. South Dakota (6-9, 0-1) lost for the first time in four games.
The Mavericks scored 43 points during the game's first 28 minutes and doubled its total in the final 12. Omaha trailed 41-29 at halftime and 55-43 with 12:30 remaining. The Mavericks scored on 21 of their final 28 possessions to sprint past the Coyotes. They made 13 of 18 shots and 11 of 15 free throws during the rally.
Carter and teammate Marcus Tyus combined for 33 of Omaha's 57 second-half points. Carter sparked a 12-0 run midway through the second half by making two free throws, a long jumper and then two three-pointers that tied the game at 55-55 with 10:27 to play.
Tyler Larson, who had 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists to lead South Dakota, converted a three-point play with 4:40 remaining that put the Yotes back in front 71-70. It was the final lead of the game for the Coyotes, who were outscored 16-6 the rest of the way.
Tyus finished with 18 points for Omaha and Jake White came off Omaha's bench to score 13 points and grab eight rebounds. Mike Rostampour added 10 points and six boards for the Mavs.
Brandon Bos had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists for South Dakota. It's the 11th consecutive game that Bos and Larson have scored in double figures. Casey Kasperbauer made three three-pointers in the first half where he scored all of his 11 points.
South Dakota made 8 of 13 three-pointers in building its 12-point halftime lead. The Coyotes made 2 of 11 in the second stanza and 14 of 41 shots overall in the second half.
Omaha shot 60 percent in the second half (17 of 28) and made 18 of 24 free throws. The Mavericks were 21 of 30 from the stripe overall.
South Dakota returns to the court Sunday to take on Denver (7-7), which began Summit League play with a 76-69 win against South Dakota State on its home court. The Coyotes will play five of their next six League games on the road.
