OMAHA, Neb.—South Dakota junior forward Eric Robertson's tip-in with eight seconds left completed the Coyotes' second-half comeback in a 74-73 win against Omaha Thursday night at Ralston Arena.
Tyler Larson scored 20 points and Sekou Harris set a season-high with 12 points – all in the final 14 minutes – as South Dakota (12-14, 6-6 Summit) earned its seventh road win this season and got back to .500 in the Summit League standings. South Dakota plays its final road game Saturday at Oral Roberts.
Omaha (8-16, 2-10) got 24 points and 15 rebounds from forward Mike Rostampour, but was unable to pull off the season sweep of South Dakota. Tre'Shawn Thurman had 12 points. CJ Carter, the third-leading scorer in the Summit, had just nine points on 2 of 11 shooting.
The Mavericks scored the game's first eight points and led 21-7 eight minutes into the contest. Larson and Tre Burnette used nine first-half points apiece to help the Coyotes recover. Omaha led 34-33 at the break.
An 11-0 run put Omaha ahead 61-50 with nine minutes to go. Harris, who made all five shots he took in the second half, scored nine points during the next four minutes to help rescue the Coyotes. Larson's layup with 3:38 remaining tied the game at 67-67. Another Larson layup on the next possession gave USD its second lead of the game.
Thurman slammed home a Carter miss with 1:14 left that put Omaha in front 73-70. Brandon Bos countered with a basket for the Coyotes with 58 seconds left that made it 73-72. Bos had nine points.
South Dakota rebounded a Thurman miss with 40 seconds left. Bos missed a 3 with 28 seconds left, but Larson pulled down his seventh rebound. Larson took a shot later in the possession and missed, but Robertson was there for the winning rebound and put back.
Omaha got two shots off in the closing seconds, but couldn't convert. The Mavericks have lost 10 of 11 since rallying to beat South Dakota 86-77 in the conference opener for both teams back on Jan. 2.
Robertson scored six points in 28 minutes off the Coyote bench and found magic for the second time at Ralston Arena. One of his top collegiate performances was his career-best 15 points against the Mavs as a freshman in late 2012. Robertson was 4 of 4 from 3-point range that day in a 95-72 Coyote victory.
South Dakota remains in fifth place in the Summit with four conference games to go. The Coyotes will play four consecutive home games to wrap up the regular season following Saturday's game in Tulsa, Okla.
