TULSA, Okla.—South Dakota's big three combined to score 53 points and Tre Burnette pulled down 16 rebounds and scored 10 points as the Coyotes beat Oral Roberts 83-70 Saturday at Mabee Center.
It was the second road win in three days for South Dakota (13-14, 7-6 Summit), which has eight true road victories this season – sixth-most in the nation. The bad news is that the Coyotes are out of road games. The team will play its final four contests at home inside the DakotaDome starting with non-conference foe Avila Tuesday.
Casey Kasperbauer scored 20 points, Tyler Larson had 19 points and Brandon Bos added 14 for South Dakota, which avenged a one-point loss to Oral Roberts two weeks ago. The trio combined to make 17 of 27 shots including 6 of 8 three-pointers. South Dakota shot a season-best 55.6 percent from the field.
Oral Roberts (14-12, 7-5) got 19 points from Obi Emegano and 11 from Korey Billbury, but those two combined to make 11 of 35 from the field. Darian Harris made half of the Golden Eagles' six triples and totaled nine points. Denell Henderson had nine points and six boards off the bench.
South Dakota scored 17 consecutive points during a seven-minute stretch in the first half to take a 35-18 lead. Kasperbauer hit back-to-back 3's during the run and Larson scored another five points. Kasperbauer was 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and reached 20 points for the third time this season.
Oral Roberts trimmed the lead to 41-33 before the first-half horn and climbed within six points early in the second half. Kasperbauer drilled two more triples and Bos made back-to-back jumpers to give South Dakota a 64-48 lead with 8:37 remaining. Bos made 5 of 10 shots and handed out four assists.
The Golden Eagles drew within seven at 66-59 with four minutes to go, but Larson scored, was fouled and made the free throw to quickly push the lead back to 10. The Coyotes then made 14 of 16 free throws in the final 2:46 to salt the game away. The Coyotes finished 17 of 20 from the stripe. Oral Roberts was 12 for 12.
Burnette's 16 rebounds are a career best and the most by a Coyote in three seasons. He also scored in double figures for the fifth-straight game. Burnette had two 10-plus efforts thru the team's first 22 games.
The win drew South Dakota within a half game of Oral Roberts and Fort Wayne, which are tied for third in the Summit League standings. The Coyotes sit 1.5 games ahead of sixth-place IUPUI.
