Box Score 2 AMES, Iowa--Iowa State pounded out 28 hits and twice held on late to take two from South Dakota Saturday at Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones won 11-10 and 6-5.Cyclone shortstop Lexi Slater was 5-for-8 during the twin bill with three home runs and seven RBIs. She homered in back-to-back innings in the opener and drove in five runs in the process. She added a two-run shot in the first inning of game two to give Iowa State (18-9) a 2-1 lead.
South Dakota catcher Allie Daly was 6-for-9 Saturday with a double and four RBIs. Shortstop Matley Jones homered in both games and extended her hitting streak to 11 games. Jones was 4-for-9 on the day.
Iowa State built an 11-4 lead in game one, but saw South Dakota (8-17-1) score six times in the top of the sixth. Yvon Minogue doubled twice in the inning. Taylor Steinfeldt tried to score the tying run from first base on Minogue's second double, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Katie Johnson, Iowa State's fourth pitcher in the opener, struck out the side in the top of the seventh to record her second save of the season. Johnson (8-5) started and finished the nightcap. She was pulled briefly in the final inning, but returned to record two outs with the bases loaded to preserve the win.
The script was similar in game two. Iowa State scored four in the first and two in the fourth and led 6-1 after four innings. Katie Cochran's two-run double in the top of the fifth pulled South Dakota within two runs at 6-4 and Jones' solo shot with one out in the seventh made it 6-5.
After Jones' homer, Daly singled and Iowa State brought in game one starter Stacy Roggentien to relieve Johnson. Roggentien walked Morgan Hancock and Cochran to load the bases. It was the only two batters Roggentien faced before Johnson reentered the circle.
Johnson got Brooke Curtis to pop out to short for the second out and Shelby Keil flied out to right for the final out. Johnson allowed five runs on nine hits. She walked three and struck out three.
South Dakota had won two in a row and three of its last four entering the series. The Coyotes open Summit League play next Saturday with the first two of a three-game set with IUPUI in Indianapolis.
