SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--Deondre Parks scored a game-high 21 points and made three of South Dakota State's 11 3-pointers as the top-seeded Jackrabbits defeated fifth-seeded South Dakota 78-65 in a Summit League Tournament semifinal game Monday at Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
South Dakota State (23-9) advances to Tuesday night's final and will take on either North Dakota State or Oral Roberts for the right to go to the NCAA Tournament. South Dakota (17-16) finishes above .500 for the first time in four years.
The Jackrabbits made 8 of 13 3-pointers in the first half and led 44-25 at the break. Point guard George Marshall made three of his four triples in the opening stanza and finished with 14 points. He also had eight rebounds and three assists.
South Dakota guard Tyler Larson scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds in his final collegiate game. It was his Summit League leading 11th double-double of the season. He all but cemented the Summit League's rebounding title, and will become the first guard to achieve that feat.
Fellow senior Brandon Bos followed his 29-point performance against Fort Wayne yesterday with 12 first-half points against the Jacks. Bos, who wears No. 12, finished his four-year career with exactly 1,200 points. He is the 25th-leading scorer in Coyote history.
Trey Norris came off the bench and scored a season-high 15 points for USD. He had three rebounds, three assists and made 7 of 9 free throws. The Coyotes, one of the top free-throw shooting teams in the nation coming in, made only 21 of 35 Monday.
South Dakota State made 11 of 26 from beyond the arc and 21 of 30 from the charity stripe. In addition to Parks and Marshall, the Jacks got nine points from Jake Bittle and eight each from Reed Tellinghuisen and Cody Larson.
State made four triples in the first eight minutes to jump out to a 17-5 lead. It was 43-21 South Dakota State when Marshall hit the Jacks' eighth three of the half.
Nine days ago, when these two teams met in Vermillion, Tre Burnette scored 19 points and Casey Kasperbauer had 17 points while Larson had 25 points to pace the Jacks. Neither of those three players scored in the first half of this one.
South Dakota State scored the first seven points out of the break to sniff out any thoughts of a Coyote comeback. With 15:41 to go, the Jacks were 9 of 16 from 3-point range while South Dakota was 9 of 33 overall.
