Box Score 2 VERMILLION, S.D.--South Dakota's softball team broke in a new scoreboard in its home debut by teeing off on Fort Wayne pitchers Saturday. The Coyotes scored 30 runs on 33 hits and blasted nine home runs in two wins against the Mastodons. Scores were 10-2 and 20-2 in two five-inning games.
South Dakota (14-21-1, 5-3 Summit) scored 20 runs for the second time this week and tied the single-game scoring record the Coyotes set Wednesday at Creighton. Like Wednesday, South Dakota hit seven home runs in working towards 20. Shortstop Shelby Keil hit three home runs in game two, including two that came during an eight-run fourth inning.
Keil and Matley Jones both drove in six runs apiece in game two. Keil was 5-for-6 during the twin bill with three homers and seven RBIs. Jones was 7-for-8 on the day with three home runs and 10 RBIs. Jones is the fifth Coyote to hit at least 11 home runs in a single season and the fifth Coyote to reach 41 RBIs.
That's not all.
Senior centerfielder Katie Dinning recorded her 15th collegiate triple to break a 14-year record held by Tiffany Davis. Dinning was 5-for-6 Saturday and scored six times. Two of her triples have come this season.
Junior first baseman Yvon Minogue, the nation's leader in doubles, notched her 20th double during game one, which ties Teri Stucky's single-season record at USD. Minogue was 4-for-5 and drew two walks during the two games. She recorded a single, a double, a triple and her sixth home run of the season.
Rachel Cue (6-12) and Madison Frain (7-8) picked up complete-game victories for the Coyotes. Cue allowed six hits in game one and recorded one strikeout. Frain pitched a four-hitter in game two with one strikeout.
Fort Wayne's highlight was a pinch-hit home run by freshman Hailey Gukeisen in the final inning of game two. It was the first collegiate hit in 10 tries by Gukeisen, who grew up in Mitchell. The Mastodons fell to 3-32 on the year and 2-9 in the Summit.
Game three at Nygaard Field starts at 11 a.m. Sunday. South Dakota has scored at least one run in every inning through the first two games.
