Box Score 2 OMAHA, Neb.--South Dakota's and Creighton's softball teams combined to hit 14 home runs and score 45 runs on 53 hits in a doubleheader Wednesday at CU Sports Complex. South Dakota won game one 20-12 in eight innings. Creighton won the nightcap 7-6.
South Dakota (12-21-1) set program single-game records for runs scored (20), hits (20) and home runs (7) in the opening game. Senior catcher Allie Daly was 4-for-5 with a program-record three home runs. Her six RBIs were one shy of her career high. Senior centerfielder Katie Dinning hit two home runs including a grand slam as part of the Coyotes' nine-run eighth inning. She was 4-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored.
Never before had a team scored 20 runs against Creighton (16-10), which now competes in the Big East. All the runs were scored against junior pitcher Micaela Whitney, a transfer from Iowa, who had surrendered 30 runs (23 earned) in 14 appearances and 83 1/3 innings entering Wednesday's games. She gave up 20 runs and all but one was earned on 20 hits in game one.
The top four hitters in South Dakota's lineup combined to go 12-for-20 with seven home runs, 17 RBIs and 12 runs scored in the opener. In addition to Daly's and Dinning's blasts, Yvon Minogue hit her fifth homer of the year and Matley Jones hit her eighth.
The Coyotes scored five runs in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead. Creighton pieced together six runs in the fourth inning that put the Bluejays in front 10-8. The game was tied at 11-11 through seven.
Whitney issued two walks with the bases loaded before surrendering the grand slam to Dinning in the eighth that made it 18-11. Daly's third homer came two batters later to make it 19-11. Katie Cochran's RBI single capped the scoring.
Creighton hit four homers in game one and three more in game two. Jen Daro had hit two home runs all season, but had three Wednesday. She hit two in game one and had a solo shot in the second inning of game two that cut into South Dakota's early 4-0 lead. Liz Dike and Blake Ringle both homered twice for Creighton during the twin bill.
Daly's sixth hit and eighth RBI of the evening gave South Dakota a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of game two. Daly was 6-for-9 during the twin bill. She moved into second place on South Dakota's all-time RBI list with 132. Her 36 career home runs are also second-best all-time.
Back-to-back walks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and Daro drove in what turned out to be the winning run with a ground ball to short.
Minogue was 4-for-4 in game two with a double and two runs scored. Her 19 doubles are among the nation's best and are one shy of South Dakota's single-season record. She upped her average to .455 on the year after going 7-for-9 against Creighton.
After 34 games, the Coyotes are ready for their home opener. South Dakota begins a three-game set with Summit League foe Fort Wayne Saturday at noon at Nygaard Field in Vermillion.
