NCAA West Prelims

2016 NCAA West Preliminaries Results

LAWRENCE, Kan.—South Dakota senior Teivaskie Lewin became the third Coyote to advance to the NCAA Championships by winning his heat of the 110 hurdles at the NCAA West Preliminaries on Saturday at Rock Chalk Park.

Lewin captured his 110-meter hurdle heat in 13.68 seconds to post the fifth-best time in the field. Lewin will compete in the 110 hurdles semifinal at 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Hayward Field. He will compete for a spot in the finals which are scheduled for 6:12 p.m. Friday, June 10.

Five athletes matched or improved their seed times Saturday, combined with the eight improvements from Friday for a total of 13.

Due to the format change that eliminated preliminaries, the top two athletes in each heat of the women's 1,500 meters and the next four fastest times advanced to the NCAA Championships. Senior Katie Wetzstein posted the 10th-best time in the field by crossing the line in 4:21.18, but did not meet either of the qualifying criteria. The No. 11-14 fastest times advanced as the top two in their respective heats. Wetzstein entered the meet with the 25th-best time.

The men's 4x100 relay, with legs run by freshman Joe Reagan, Lewin, senior Jeff O'Connell and sophomore Gawain Williams, placed 16th. The relay clocked a time of 40.35 seconds. Only this year's 4x100 relay has clocked a faster time in school history.

Senior Kyle McKelvey took 22nd in the shot put with a throw of 58-10. McKelvey entered the meet ranked 23rd in the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Junior Danielle Waldner matched her No. 24 seed with a throw of 50-11 ½ in the shot put. It's Waldner's highest finish in three consecutive years of qualifying for the preliminaries in the shot put.

Junior Ashley Thompson placed 31st in the triple jump with a leap of 40-8 ¾. She improved 14 places from her No. 45 seed.

Lewin joins senior Emily Grove and junior Emily Brigham as qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
