Coyotes wrap up indoor regular season

VERMILLION, S.D.–South Dakota pole vaulter Emily Grove cleared a season-best 14-7 ½ to set the DakotaDome record in the final event of the USD Last Chance Meet on Hillenbrand Memorial Track on Friday evening.
 
A five-time All-American, Grove has exhausted her indoor eligibility and was competing unattached. She joins the Coyotes for her final outdoor season in March. Seniors Hunter Wilkes and Madison Mills finished second and third at 13-1 ½.
 
USD alumna Katie Wetzstein broke her own DakotaDome record by three seconds in the one-mile run. She finished in 4:50.34 and led a pack of seven current Coyotes to sub-5:07 times. Senior Amber Eichkorn was the top collegiate in 4:59.44.
 
Coyote freshman Samara Spencer captured a pair of events. She tied her personal best of 7.76 seconds to win the 60 meters and took the long jump in 18-9 ¾. Junior Emily Brigham finished runner-up in the long jump with a season best 18-9, which moved her to sixth in the Summit League.
 
A pair of men's pole vaulters, junior Jake David and freshman Ethan Bray, posted indoor personal bests of 17-1. David won the event based on missed attempts while Bray finished runner-up.
 
Freshman Zack Anderson swept all three jumping events. Anderson won the long jump in 22-3 ¾, the triple jump in 45-0 ½, and was the only competitor in the high jump at 6-8.
 
Freshman Britny Kerr cleared a personal best 5-5 to win the high jump.
 
Junior Brooke Ireland won the 400 meters with a season best 57.98 seconds. Freshman Mason Wichers captured the men's 400 meters.
 
Summit leaders in their respective events, juniors Gawain Williams and Shanice Cannigan won the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Williams clocked 6.84 seconds and Cannigan crossed the line in 8.85 seconds. Williams also won the 200 meters in 22.52 seconds. Senior Jay Cooper won the men's 60 hurdles in 8.32 seconds.
 
Senior Danielle Waldner, who also leads the Summit, won the shot put by roughly four feet with a mark of 50-2. Junior Jacob Barents won the weight throw by two feet with a toss of 61-3.
 
The Summit League Indoor Championships are held Feb. 24-25 at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D.
