Summit in the NIT
South Dakota makes its NIT debut at 8 p.m. Wednesday against the Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes. The Coyotes are the third Summit League team in the last three years to compete in the NIT. Before 2015, Oral Roberts' appearances in 2005 and 2012 and Valparaiso's trip in 2003 were the conference's only appearances since 1992.

With the exception of Missouri State in 1986, no Summit League program has reached the quarterfinals of the NIT. South Dakota State's win against Colorado State in 2015 was the conference's first victory in the tournament since 1990. The good news – a No. 1 seed, like Iowa, has lost a first-round matchup in each of the last five seasons.

Dickerson's return to Iowa
Perhaps the biggest storyline in Wednesday's game is South Dakota point guard Trey Dickerson's return to Iowa City, where he competed during the 2014-15 season. Dickerson averaged 2.7 points in 15 games as a Hawkeye with 18 assists and seven steals. This year, Dickerson has started all 33 games and is the Coyotes' third-leading scorer at 10.4 points per game. He also leads USD with 93 assists.

Flack too
South Dakota senior Tyler Flack is expected to be announced in the starting lineups at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the second time. Flack had five points, seven boards and two swats in a game played in Iowa City in December of 2012. He is the lone holdover from that game on either side. Iowa prevailed in that contest 87-63.

How They Got There
South Dakota received an automatic bid to the NIT after winning the Summit League's regular season championship, but failing to be picked for the NCAA Tournament. Iowa was designated as one of the first four teams left out of the NCAA Tournament, which automatically made them a No. 1 seed in the NIT. It is the eighth NIT appearance for the Hawkeyes, who advanced to the championship game in their last appearance in 2013.

The Hawkeyes
Iowa's roster rivals South Dakota's in its youth. The Hawkeyes' have four upperclassmen and only two see significant minutes. Senior guard Peter Jok is a first-team all-Big Ten honoree who leads the team in scoring at nearly 20 points per game. True freshmen Tyler Cook and Jordan Bohannon average 12 and 10 points, respectively. Cook is the team's third-leading rebounder and shoots 52 percent from the field. Bohannon is a 3-point specialist who shoots better from beyond the arc than from inside it. He also has 151 assists. Sophomore Nicholas Baer, the team's top rebounder and fifth-leading scorer, is the Big Ten's Sixth Man of the Year.

The Coyotes
South Dakota had won seven in a row before falling to South Dakota State on a last-second shot in the Summit League Tournament semifinals. The Coyotes have two first-team all-conference performers in sophomore Matt Mooney and senior Tyler Flack. Mooney averaged 27 points in two tournament games and is the team's leading scorer at 18 points per game. Flack averages 15 points and is the team's leading rebounder and shot blocker.

South Dakota is making its second postseason appearance at the Division I level and 16th overall. The Coyotes competed in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2010.

New (Experimental) Rules!
No more 1-and-1's. The team fouls will reset to zero at the 10-minute mark of each half and at the end of each half. Every foul committed past four will result in two free throws for the opposing team. In overtime, all team fouls past three will result in two shots.

The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds (or will remain the same if greater than 20 seconds) on any foul committed by the defense that does not result in free throws. It will also reset to 20 if a technical foul is assessed or if the game is stopped for a bleeding player or blood on the uniform.

Final Four at Madison Square Garden
The NIT is comprised of 32 teams which means it takes five wins to capture the title. The first three rounds will take place on campus sites of the highest seeded team. The semifinals and championship game will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City March 28-30.

The winner of South Dakota and Iowa will take on the winner of No. 4 TCU and No. 5 Fresno State. A date and time for that game will be determined after the completion of Wednesday's games.
