Yotes break 4x100 record at Baldy Castillo

T&F: Baldy Castillo

2017 Baldy Castillo Results

TEMPE, Ariz.–The South Dakota men's 4x100-meter relay broke school and state records for the second consecutive season at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium.

Senior Jack Thony, sophomore Joe Reagan, freshman Sam Clark and junior Gawain Williams combined for 40.13 seconds in the 400 relay to break the records. The Coyotes were fifth in the race behind four Power Five programs. Thony and Williams ran the same legs on last year's relay, which previously held the school record of 40.15. The duo was joined by Teivaskie Lewin and Jeff O'Connell a year ago.

Senior Danielle Waldner launched the shot put 53 feet, 1 ¼ inches, on her final throw to move into second place. Waldner was the top collegiate finisher and just a quarter of an inch off her own school record.

Williams took third in the open 100 meters with a clocking of 10.46 seconds. He was just two-tenths of a second off his personal best 10.26 seconds.

Senior Emily Grove tied for second in the pole vault in her first competition back in uniform. Grove cleared 13-1 ¼. Senior Madison Mills took eighth in the field with a height of 12-7 ½.

Senior Emily Brigham leaped 18-8 ¾ for seventh in the long jump.

A trio of Coyotes finished in the top-half of the men's discus field. Senior Dustin Valind took eighth with a throw of 162-8 ¼. Junior Ethan Fenchel and sophomore Ben Hammer took 10th and 13th, respectively, in 161-1 ¾ and 159-3.

Sophomores Mario Magana and Brennan Schmidt both clocked sub-50 in the 400 meters. Magana took ninth in 48.66 seconds and Schmidt finished 13th in 48.85.

Freshman Britny Kerr placed eighth in the high jump after making 5-4 ¾ on her third attempt.

Senior Meghan Dennis sent the discus 147-11 ¾ to finish 12th in the field.

The Coyote trio of freshman Julia Noah, redshirt-junior Nicole Schmidt and junior Lindsay Joyce finished, in order, 14th, 16th and 17th in the 800-meter run. Noah crossed the finish line in 2:15.43. Schmidt clocked 2:16.39 and Joyce finished in 2:16.75.

Junior Shanice took 13th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.41 seconds.

The Coyotes return to the Midwest next weekend and compete at the Wayne State Classic on Friday and Saturday.
