Shanice Cannigan and freshman
Ethan Bray were victorious in their respective events at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational on Friday at Bobcat Stadium.
Schmidt led a trio of Coyotes to the top four of the 1,500 meters. Schmidt negative split the race to capture the event in 4 minutes, 41.18 seconds. An unattached runner finished runner-up to break up the Coyote pack as senior
Amber Eichkorn and sophomore
Megan Billington took third and fourth, respectively. Eichkorn crossed the finish line in 4:44.02 and Billington clocked 4:45.07.
Cannigan prevailed in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.63, a tenth of a second faster than the runner-up. Cannigan was coming off races in the 110-meter hurdles and 4x100-meter relay at the Texas Relays earlier on Friday.
Bray triumphed in the pole vault by clearing 16-4 ¾ on his first attempt. Bray had no through 16-4 ¾ before missing all three attempts at 16-8 ¾.
In his first competition back from an injury at the beginning of the indoor season, freshman
Ethan Toy leaped 24-4 ½ to finish runner-up in the long jump. Toy's jump ties for fourth on USD's all-time charts.
Four Coyotes placed in the top-10 of the 5,000 meters led by freshman
Kianna Stewart. Stewart finished runner-up with a time of 17:15.16 to move to seventh on USD's all-time charts. Trailing right behind Stewart, junior
Lindsay Joyce and sophomore
Madeline Huglen took third and fourth. Joyce posted a time of 17:17.56 and Huglen finished in 17:18.89. Freshman
Julia Noah took 10th. All four teamed with Billington on USD's third-straight Summit League Championship cross country team last fall.
Sophomore
Eldon Warner dropped 11 seconds off his personal best when he crossed the finish line in 3:54.43. Warner was the top collegiate and placed third overall.
Senior
Jay Cooper placed third overall and was the second collegiate finisher in the 400 hurdles. Cooper clocked 52.46 seconds.
After sitting atop the standings in the heptathlon after the first day of competition, freshman
Britny Kerr dropped to second place on day two. Kerr finished runner-up with 4,596 points for the 10th best mark in USD program history. Sophomore
Haley Bruggeman remained in fourth place with 4,407 points. Bruggeman took second in the 800 meters in 2:28.34.
Freshman
Jordan Fujan improved five spots to fifth place in the decathlon with 5,589 points. Notably, Fujan clocked 5:04.82 for third in the 1,500 meters.
The Coyotes continue action at the Bobcat Invitational at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
