2017 Pacific Coast Results
LONG BEACH, Calif.–South Dakota freshman
Chris Nilsen moved into a tie for first in the NCAA pole vault standings to highlight 14 top-five performances by the Coyotes at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday at Jack Rose Track. The Coyotes took second in the women's team race with 59 points and sixth on the men's side with 44 points.
Nilsen captured the event when he cleared 18 feet, 8 ¼. The height ties him with Texas A&M junior Audie Wyatt and Virginia Tech junior Torben Laidig this season. It also ties Nilsen's personal best from the indoor season and sets a new South Dakota outdoor program record. Nilsen took three shots at 18-11 and narrowly clipped the bar on his second attempt at the height.
In the women's pole vault, senior
Emily Grove was the top collegiate and third overall in the field. She cleared 14-3 ¼. Grove ranks second in the nation this season with her season best of 14-9 from the Texas Relays.
Senior
Danielle Waldner added a victory in the shot put with a throw of 50-11. Waldner took the event title by more than two feet.
Sophomore
Madeline Huglen and freshman
Kianna Stewart finished first and second in the 5,000 meters. Huglen crossed the finish line in 17:25.72 while Stewart clocked 17:41.97. The Coyotes have five of the top-six marks in the Summit League standings this season.
The Coyotes also placed two in the top-three of the men's high jump. Freshman
Zack Anderson tied his season best of 6-10 ¾ to finish runner-up. Senior
Tyler Frank placed third in 6-9 ½. Anderson's height leads the Summit League and is tied for 50th in the nation.
Junior
Shanice Cannigan finished runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a clocking of 1:02.02. Cannigan was also the fourth collegiate across the line, placing seventh overall, in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.02.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, senior
Jay Cooper placed third with a time of 52.85 seconds.
Senior
Meghan Dennis threw 147-10 to take third in the javelin.
The Coyotes placed in the top-five of both the men's and women's 400 meters. Junior
Brooke Ireland clocked a season best 56.20 seconds to take third. Sophomore
Brennan Schmidt was fourth after tying his season best time of 48.42 seconds.
Junior
Gawain Williams clocked a season best 21.57 seconds for 200 meters to take fourth.
Junior
Jacob Barents launched the hammer 194-6 for fifth in the event.
