South Dakota hosts No. 23 Iowa State at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion, S.D. The game will be broadcast by MidcoSN and picked up by both MC22 and ESPN+.
The Game
While five Power 5 programs have visited Vermillion in the last three seasons, this will mark the first time South Dakota has hosted an AP Top 25 team. A win would also give the Coyotes their first victory over an AP Top 25 program in history. It should be noted that before the NCAA sponsored women's basketball, USD played three AIAW ranked opponents in 1980-81 and hosted No. 18 Minnesota.
The Coyotes
South Dakota (5-1) is off to a hot start with the Coyotes' lone loss coming at Drake (ranked No. 24 in the latest AP Poll). While USD's defense has been impressive at 56.8 points per game, the statistic that has stood out early on is how the Coyotes have handled the basketball. South Dakota leads the country in fewest turnovers per game with 10.2. Junior guard
Ciara Duffy hit her stride over Thanksgiving weekend. She's coming off a career-high 26-point performance at Montana where she shot 61 percent from the floor. She also swatted away a career-best three blocks in the game. She added 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists last Wednesday against Wichita State inside the Sanford Pentagon. Duffy leads the team this season with 13.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
The Cyclones
Iowa State (5-0), who boasts eight NCAA Tournament berths in the last decade, entered the Associated Press poll for the first time since January of 2014. The Cyclones rolled through the Preseason WNIT to take home the gold, including a 75-52 win over No. 24 Miami in the championship. The Cyclones are paced by senior Bridget Carleton's 16.4 points, 11.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. She was a finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award last season, which recognizes the nation's top small forward. This will be Iowa State's first true road game of the season after hosting the four Preseason WNIT games and a neutral site game in Carleton's hometown.
The Series
Tonight marks a big rematch between the Coyotes and the Cyclones. Iowa State overcame an eight-point deficit to top the Coyotes 81-76 inside Hilton Coliseum in last year's season opener. The Cyclones have won the last five in the series to lead it 6-4. Iowa State makes its first trip to Vermillion since 1984, coincidentally the last time South Dakota beat Iowa State.
One Last Thing
Did we mention that South Dakota leads the nation in fewest turnovers per game with 10.2? The Coyotes committed a season-low six turnovers at Montana and have committed 31 fewer turnovers than at this time last year.
