The Sanford Coyote Sports Center is sold out as the South Dakota men's basketball team hosts South Dakota State in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday. The doubleheader is part of the South Dakota Showdown Series presented by South Dakota Corn.
The Game
In the first sellout of the three-year-old facility, the Coyotes and Jackrabbits are set to tip-off at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, following the conclusion of the women's game. In all, two points for the South Dakota Showdown Series are up for grabs between the two games.
Although tickets do not remain for the event, fans can watch the game on MidcoSN, ESPN+ or via the free live stream on GoYotes.com/watch. Joe Van Goor, the Voice of the Coyotes, will have the call on the Coyote Sports Network, including the flagship KVHT 106.3 FM in Yankton/Vermillion. An audio stream can also be found at GoYotes.com or by using the TuneIn radio app.
The Jackrabbits
South Dakota State is 11-6 overall and 1-1 in Summit League play. The preseason favorites, SDSU opens league play with three-straight games on the road, concluding with Sunday's contest. The first was a victory at Western Illinois and most recently, the Jackrabbits fell 104-88 at Fort Wayne. Senior Mike Daum totaled 29 points in the game while David Jenkins Jr. added 21 as SDSU shot 46.5 percent from the floor.
On the season, Daum averages a double-double of 24.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Both averages top the Summit League. Jenkins totals 20.1 points per game as Skyler Flatten joins the duo in the double-digit club at 14.9 points per game.
The Jacks are 2-3 over their last five games with losses coming to Montana, Nevada and Purdue Fort Wayne. The two victories came over Eastern Washington and Western Illinois.
The Coyotes
South Dakota, 7-8 on the season and 1-1 in Summit League play, is fresh off a dramatic victory at Denver thanks to a game-winning layup from junior
Cody Kelley. The basket pushed USD to a 71-70 victory with seven seconds remaining in the game. Kelley had the heroics, but junior
Triston Simpson led the way with 20 points and senior
Trey Burch-Manning added 18 points. Sophomore
Stanley Umude continued his recent offensive surge with 13 points, the seventh time in the last nine games he reached double digits.
For the season, Simpson and Burch-Manning lead the way with 12.6 and 12.5 points per game, respectively. Junior
Tyler Peterson adds 11.5 points and Umude 11.2 points per game. Burch-Manning tops the team with 6.4 rebounds per contest and is tops in the Summit League with his 24 steals.
The Series
The Jackrabbits hold the series lead at 128-95. South Dakota State is South Dakota's most-played opponent with 223 meetings dating back to 1914-15. Did you know the two squads met four times that year? The fourth meeting ended in controversy with USD claiming a 16-15 victory while SDSU claims a 15-15 tie.
One Last Thing
South Dakota's victory at Denver was fueled by an unlikely source, the 3-point shot. The Coyotes tallied 12-made 3-point baskets, a season high. The 12-of-23 performance also marked a season-best percentage of 52.2. Simpson made four of the long-range shots with Burch-Manning three of them. Junior
Brandon Armstrong was 2-of-2 from deep with Kelley, Peterson and Umude all joining in the long-range fun with a made 3-point attempt. South Dakota average 6.4 3-point field goals per game.
