Rivalry round one slated for Sunday

WBB vs. South Dakota St.

South Dakota returns home for the first time in nearly a month to host in-state rival South Dakota State at 1 p.m. Sunday in the first half of a doubleheader inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion, S.D.

The Game
Sunday marks the 86th meeting between in-state rivals South Dakota and South Dakota State, this one coming in front of a sold-out Sanford Coyote Sports Center. This marks the first sellout since the facility came online in the fall of 2016 and the Coyote women look to defend a 35-3 home record since its doors opened. This marks the first meeting of the season between the two programs picked atop the Summit League preseason poll. On the line is a point in the South Dakota Showdown Series, a yearlong athletic and academic competition between USD and SDSU.

The Coyotes
South Dakota (13-3, 1-1 Summit) finished 12-2 in the nonconference for the best record in the program's NCAA Division I era. The Coyotes have two wins against AP Top 25 teams, the first in program history and marking the first time a Summit program has posted two top-25 wins in the regular season. The Coyotes are all-around balanced with seven different leading scorers this season, but returning all-Summit League first team guards Ciara Duffy and Allison Arens are the only two players in double-figures. South Dakota's defense continues to lead the Summit League for points per game allowed. Prior to Thursday's 104-99 loss at Denver, the Coyotes were holding foes to 55 points per game. It marked the first time in Plitzuweit's tenure that an opponent had scored more than 90 points on USD.

The Jackrabbits
South Dakota State (10-5, 2-0 Summit) brings back eight letterwinners from last season, led by senior guards Macy Miller and Madison Guebert. Miller, the 2018 Summit League Player of the Year, is averaging 16.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Guebert, a two-time all-Summit League first team honoree, averages 14 points with her 49 3-pointers this season ranking fifth in the nation. Three of SDSU's losses this season have come to AP Top 25 teams, while they boast an 80-71 win over No. 21 Drake. The Jacks boast the ninth-best field-goal percentage in the nation, led by Miller's 54.7 percent from the floor. SDSU also leads the league with a 1.24 assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Series
South Dakota State leads the all-time series 56-29. The Coyotes have won four-straight in Vermillion and have swept the Jacks in the regular season twice in the last three years.

One Last Thing
The countdown is on... South Dakota junior guard Ciara Duffy is 15 away from reaching 1,000 career points. She would become the 26th player to accomplish the feat in a Coyote uniform.
