FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—South Dakota junior
Abby Ripperda continues her impressive fall with an eighth-place finish in a loaded Chile Pepper Festival field on Saturday morning at Agri Park.
Ripperda completed the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 45.5 seconds, for a new personal best at the distance. Taking eighth in the field, Ripperda was the first athlete not from No. 2 Arkansas, No. 19 Oklahoma State or RV Texas to cross the finish line.
This marked South Dakota's first appearance at the Chile Pepper Festival since 2010. Ripperda topped the previous course record set that year by more than 90 seconds.
Senior
Kianna Stewart was the second Yote across the finish line in a personal-best 17:36.8 for 42nd place.
Juniors
Laura Nelson and
Jonna Bart worked together from the midway point of the race. Nelson took 60th in a season-best 17:54.5 and Bart finished 65th with a season-best time of 17:56.8. Junior
Kelsi Kearney rounded out the scorers in 95th with a time of 18:21.2.
Coyote pushers on Saturday were sophomore
Maddie Lavin and freshman
Helen Gould, crossing the finish line 18:35.5 and 19:10.3, respectively.
The Coyote women finished eighth in the field with 230 points. Host and nationally second-ranked Arkansas ran away with the meet title with 24 points, while Texas (RV) took second with 90. South Dakota topped the likes of Baylor, Oklahoma, Rice and Missouri State in the race.
Sophomore
Merga Gemeda paced the Coyote men with a 72nd-place finish, completing the 8,000-meter course in a personal-best 25:15.3.
The duo of freshman
Clayton Whitehead and senior
Abdinasir Abdi met up near the end of the course. Whitehead crossed the finish line in 101st with a time of 25:34.1, while Abdi clocked 25:37.1. Both were personal-best times.
South Dakota's scorers were rounded out by freshman
Alec Atwood and junior
Kallo Arno. Atwood took 155th in a season-best 26:10.3, while Arno clocked a season-best 26:40.9 for 214th.
Junior
Seth Iverson and freshman
Camden Wulf were the Coyote pushers in the race. Iverson completed the course in 26:58.9 while Wulf clocked a personal-best 27:03.7. Iverson's time was one-second off a personal best. Freshman
Braden Peters was just behind Wulf as the eighth runner in the field in a personal-best 27:03.8.
South Dakota's men took 21st in the team race with 566 points.
The Coyotes return to action on Oct. 18 for the final regular season tune-up at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Illinois.
