HONOLULU, Hawai'i—South Dakota junior
Stanley Umude has been named the Most Outstanding Player of the Rainbow Classic hosted Nov. 8-11 by University of Hawai'i. He was joined on the six-person all-tournament team by senior teammates
Triston Simpson and
Tyler Hagedorn. The Coyotes won the tournament with a 3-0 record.
Umude averaged 18.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game throughout the tournament. He shot 43 percent from the field, made 5-of-11 from downtown and was 15-of-16 from the free-throw line. Umude also had five assists, two blocks and three steals. His numbers include a 21-point, 7-rebound performance in Sunday's 81-75 win against Hawai'i.
Hagedorn netted a pair of 20-point games, scoring a team-high 24 in Friday's 72-62 season-opening win against Pacific, and leading the Coyotes with 23 points in Monday's 85-82 victory over Florida A&M. Hagedorn shot 65 percent from the field, made 7-of-9 from three-point range and was 10-of-11 from the stripe. Hagedorn also totaled 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Simpson posted back-to-back games of 22 points each in the wins against Hawai'i and Florida A&M. He combined to make 15-of-20 from the floor in those games including a 6-of-7 performance from beyond the arc. Simpson averaged 17 points in all, handed out seven assists and pulled down six rebounds.
South Dakota returns to host Texas Southern Friday in the Coyotes' home opener inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
