MBB at SDSU

02.22.2019

The South Dakota men's basketball team travels to South Dakota State for its final road trip of the season in a South Dakota Showdown Series contest presented by South Dakota Corn.

The Game
South Dakota looks to carry the momentum of two-straight wins into the 4 p.m. tipoff while South Dakota State has rebounded to win two straight after falling at the buzzer at Omaha on Feb. 14. The Coyotes are continuing to jockey for position in the Summit League Tournament while the Jacks have secured a top-two finish in the Summit League.

Saturday's game airs on MidcoSN and will be carried on ESPN3, part of the WatchESPN platform. A live stream is also available at GoJacks.com/Watch for a fee. Live audio is available on the Coyote Sports Network, including KVHT 106.3 FM (flagship) in Yankton/Vermillion. Audio is also available on GoYotes.com/Watch or on the TuneIn app.

The Showdown Series presented by South Dakota Corn
Another point is up for grabs Saturday as part of the yearlong athletic and academic competition between USD and SDSU. South Dakota has won three of the last four Showdown Series titles, including last year where Feeding South Dakota was able to provide 280,000 meals for adults and children throughout the state because of a generous $70,000 donation from South Dakota Corn.

The Jackrabbits
Summit League preseason favorite South Dakota State sits 22-7 on the season and atop the league standings at 12-2. The Jacks are coming off a 92-83 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne Thursday night. The Mastodons held a 53-49 halftime advantage but SDSU stormed back in the second half outscoring the away team 43-30. Senior Mike Daum had a double-double of 38 points and 20 rebounds while David Jenkins Jr. added 22 points in the victory.

Daum ranks in the top-five in the nation with his 25.8 points per game average while also ranking in the top-five with his 11.9 rebounds per game. Over his last five games, he is averaging 31 points and 15.2 rebounds per outing. David Jenkins Jr. ranks second on the Jackrabbits with his 19.9 points per game as Skyler Flatten joins the duo in double figures at 15.2 points per outing. Jenkins Jr. is top-10 nationally with his 3.6 made 3-point field goals per game.

The Coyotes
Having locked up their spot in the Summit League Tournament, the Coyotes now own an 11-15 overall record and 5-8 in Summit action. In the 72-45 win against Denver on Wednesday, sophomore Stanley Umude tallied his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Triston Simpson chipped in 13 points. Cody Kelley and Trey Burch-Manning also reached double figures at 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Umude isn't the only Coyote to be on a tear as of late as Simpson has scored at least 13 points in eight-straight games. Over that span, he has averaged 16.4 points per game while maintaining 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

For the season, Umude leads the Coyotes at 14.8 points per game, a mark that jumps to 19 points per Summit League contest. Simpson is second on the team at 13.7 points per game while Burch-Manning tallies 11.5 points and Tyler Peterson 10.8 points per outing. Burch-Manning tops the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Series
South Dakota State holds the series lead at 129-95 while maintaining a lead of 80-23 in games played in Brookings. The Jackrabbits are the Coyotes most-played opponent, meeting for the first time in 1914-15. That first season, the two squads matched-up four times with USD sweeping the season series.

One Last Thing
South Dakota held Denver to just 45 points on Wednesday night. The 45 points are the lowest total a Division I opponent has scored against the Coyotes in the Division I era. In the era, South Dakota owns six games of holding an opponent into the 40s.
