Nilsen highlights action in Arkansas, Coyote distance medley wins in Brookings

T&F: Friday Results

Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—South Dakota junior Chris Nilsen was the top collegian in the men's invitational pole vault at the Tyson Invitational on Friday night at the Tyson Indoor Track.

Consistency has been key for Nilsen, who matched his season-best of 18 feet, 8 ¾ inches, for the third-straight week. Nilsen finished runner-up overall in the competition to professional vaulter Andrew Irwin, an Arkansas alum, vaulting in front of his home crowd. Nilsen topped five men ranked in the NCAA's top-10 this season.

Senior Joe Reagan impressed in the men's long jump with a leap of 24-0 ¼. The mark is two inches shy of his personal best. Reagan also clocked 6.97 seconds for 60 meters on Friday.

In the non-invitational section of the men's pole vault, freshman Sean McClellan took eighth with a vault of 16-0.

Junior Samara Spencer finished 10th in the women's invitational long jump, reaching a distance of 18-1 ½. She also clocked 7.74 seconds for the 60 meters.

Action at the Tyson Invitational starts back up at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

SDSU Classic

BROOKINGS, S.D.—The Coyote women captured the distance medley relay at the SDSU Classic with a clocking of 11 minutes, 43.23 seconds, inside the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex. Senior Eldon Warner added a win in the men's 3,000 meters.

The medley consisted of senior Madeline Huglen on the opening 1,200 meters, freshman Haley Arens racing the 400 meters, sophomore Macy Heinz carried the stick for the 800-meter leg and senior Megan Billington anchored the relay for 1,600 meters. The quartet clocked the second-fastest time in program history, two seconds off the school record from 2008.

Warner clocked 8:18.53 to capture the 3,000 meters in the nightcap. Warner holds USD's school record in the event with a time of 8:09.20, which he set last season.

Senior Karina Dufoe finished runner-up in the women's 200 meters with a clocking of 25.06 seconds.

The Coyote women swept fifth through ninth in the 3,000 meters with junior Kianna Stewart's fifth-place finish in 10:00.52 leading the way. Sophomore Jonna Bart placed sixth, redshirt-freshman Morgan Lawler took seventh, sophomore Laura Nelson finished eighth and senior Brook Benes finished ninth.

Friday night's action primarily consisted of preliminaries and limited field event sections. The SDSU Classic picks back up at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
