Warner nearly sneaks away with Texas Relays title on day one

AUSTIN, Texas—South Dakota senior Eldon Warner finished runner-up in the 1,500 meters at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday night.
 
Warner nearly took home the gold, with his closing kick falling just short of the leader at the tape. He clocked 3 minutes, 50.68 seconds, to finish as the top collegian in the field. Professional Jose Rodriguez won the event in 3:50.54.


 
Clocking a new outdoor personal best for 5,000 meters, senior Megan Billington crossed the finish line in 16:50.92. Billington placed third overall and was the second collegiate finisher. Sophomore Laura Nelson finished 17th.
 
Senior Lara Boman launched the hammer 205-8 to place fifth overall in the competition. She was the fourth-best collegian in the field.
 
In the season's steeplechase opener, senior Madeline Huglen took sixth with a time of 10:41.01. Sophomore Jonna Bart recovered from a mid-race fall to finish 13th.
 
Redshirt-senior Ethan Fenchel took 14th in the hammer throw on the men's side, sending it 198-6.
 
Also competing on Thursday, junior Nick Johnson cleared 16-0 ¾ in the pole vault.
 
The Coyotes have had three champions at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays since the program began sending athletes in 2012. The latest champion came a year ago, as Chris Nilsen captured the pole vault with a height of 19-0 ¼.
 
South Dakota kicks off Friday's action at 9:35 a.m. inside Mike A. Myers Stadium.
 
 
Bobcat Invitational
 
SAN MARCOS, Texas—South Dakota also has a contingent of athletes competing at the Bobcat Invitational hosted at Texas State this weekend.
 
Through the first four of seven events in the women's heptathlon, sophomore Holly Gerberding sits in seventh place with 2,811 points. Gerberding moved up in the standings after winning the fourth event of the day, the 200 meters, in 25.14 seconds. Senior Haley Bruggeman sits behind in ninth place.
 
Sophomore Callie Henrich finished 24th and senior Molly Schiermeyer took 28th in the women's discus throw on Thursday.
 
The Coyotes get back to action at Bobcat Stadium for the heptathlon at 9 a.m. Friday.
