South Dakota Hosts South Dakota State in the Showdown Series

MBB vs. SDSU

VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota men's basketball team is back home to host its in-state rival South Dakota State on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The Game
The Coyotes are coming off a tough loss at the hands of North Dakota State, 72-70. On the brighter side, USD is back home where they are 7-1 this season. Tyler Hagedorn is five points away from tallying 1,000 career points. This is the 225th meeting between the two South Dakota schools.

About The South Dakota Showdown Series
Two points are up for grabs this weekend in the South Dakota Showdown Series presented by South Dakota Corn, a yearlong athletic and academic competition between USD and SDSU.

Both universities are encouraging fans to "Get Off the Bench" to help combat hunger in the state of South Dakota. Fans attending either Saturday or Sunday's games can donate to Feeding South Dakota, a hunger relief organization in Sioux Falls, by swiping their credit/debit cards at "dip jars" located in the arena's concession stands, or through cash donations at donation barrels throughout the concourse. Donate online at www.feedingsouthdakota.org/showdown. Fans can also donate $1 or more at all Aramark concession cash registers as well (in addition to cash barrels on the concourse).

Fans will notice that the players will be wearing burnt orange shooting shirts during warmups, while many of the coaches will be incorporating orange into their game day attire. The color burnt orange represents the fight to end hunger.

South Dakota took the advantage in the fall of this year's Showdown Series, leading 5.5 points to 1.5 points entering this weekend

The Jackrabbits (14-7, 5-1 SL)
South Dakota State was presumed to be in a rebuilding year after losing four players from its starting rotation last season including its all-time leading scorer in Mike Daum and a first-team all-Summit League performer in David Jenkins Jr. In addition to losing some of its players, the Jacks also lost its coach in T.J. Otzelberger as he accepted a heading coaching job at UNLV.

After losing their first game of conference play, the Jacks have won five straight to sit alone at the top of the League standings. In nonconference play, the Jacks played against four Power-5 schools and competed in all four regardless of the final score.

South Dakota State is led by junior college transfer Douglas Wilson, who was named the junior college player of the year in 2018-19, with 17.7 points per game while Matt Dentlinger is second on the team with 10.4 points per game. True freshman Noah Freidel averages 9.8 points overall and has been averaging 16 points during conference play.

As a team, the Jacks are shooting 77 percent from the field while holding its opponents to 68.8 points per contest. SDSU is shooting 47 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep.

During the five-game winning streak the Jacks are outscoring their opponents by an average of 18.8 points per game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 43 from deep.

The Coyotes (11-8, 2-3 SL)
South Dakota started conference play 0-2 but bounced back with wins over Denver and gave Omaha its first loss in conference play. On Wednesday, the Coyotes traveled to face the Bison of North Dakota State and fell in heartbreaking fashion as NDSU guard Tyson Ward took advantage of a lapse of defense from the Yotes to hit the game winning layup with just under two seconds left.

USD is looking to snap a four-game losing streak to rival SDSU, but good news for the Yotes as they have a 7-1 record at home this season and a 64-37 record all-time against the Jacks in Vermillion.

Senior Tyler Hagedorn is the team's leading scorer with 18.4 points per game which ranks first in the Summit while Stanley Umude is second on the team with 17.5 points which ranks third in the League. Hagedorn is the nation's leader in 3-point percentage after hitting on 42-of-80 attempts for 52.5 percent. Senior Cody Kelley has also been having an efficient year from deep as he ranks third in the nation with an efficient 48.8 percent from deep.

As a team, the Yotes are shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from deep. USD ranks fifth nationally in 3-point shooting and 26th nationally in overall field-goal shooting.

The Series
SDSU holds the all-time series lead with a 128-95 record but the Yotes hold a 64-37 advantage in Vermillion. The Jacks have won the previous four matchups by a combined 22 points and seven points in the last two matchups against USD.

One Last Thing
The men will play in the second part of a double-header as the women's game originally scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. was rescheduled to Sunday at 1 p.m. due to the weather conditions in the area. Tickets can be purchased online at GoYotes.com or by calling the South Dakota Ticket Office at 605-677-5959. For more information of ticket information click here.
