The Coyotes
Friday night wraps up a three-game homestand for South Dakota (5-4) that began last Saturday. Since returning home from the Paradise Jam, the Coyotes have earned wins over Wichita State and Bradley to move above .500 for the first time this season. The Coyotes have had one heck of a nonconference slate – ranked as the second-toughest schedule in the nation to date by the NCAA's rankings with opponents' records a combined 51-11. South Dakota is coming off a balanced team win against Bradley with seven players contributing five or more points.
The Beacons
Valparaiso (0-8) will have a quick turnaround after its 73-56 loss to No. 22 Notre Dame on Wednesday night. The Beacons have three players averaging double-digits this season in Carie Wienman (12.6), Shay Frederick (11.1) and Grace White (10.4). The squad has let it fly from deep this year – with nearly 26 3-point attempts per contest, half of the Beacons' shot attempts have been outside the arc. Valparaiso is the second-straight and third overall team from the Missouri Valley Conference on the Coyotes' nonconference slate.
The Series
South Dakota holds a 2-0 advantage in the series' history, with a home-and-home from the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons previously on the books. The Coyotes won the last meeting in Vermillion 81-62 on Dec. 9, 2014.
One Last Thing
South Dakota's defense has been impressive this year. Even with an incredibly tough slate, they are holding foes to 57 points per game. Combined, the nine opponents have scored an average of 16 points less against the Coyotes than their season scoring offense.
