VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a pair of duals with its rivals South Dakota State on Friday in the DakotaDome Pool.
The Coyote men, winning 11 of the 13 events contested, posted a 163-80 win over the Jackrabbits while the Coyote women fell 149-92.
South Dakota set a pair of new school records for its meters pool during the duals as the men's 200 meter medley relay foursome of
Brady Torborg,
Mack Sathre,
Aidan Gantenbein and
Zachary Kopp swam 1:45.35 to shave :0.40 off the previous school mark.
It was an even slimer margin for
Maddie Lavin in the 100 butterfly, where she set a new school record by one one-thousandth of a second in winning in 1:04.79. Lavin, a Vermillion, native, now holds both butterfly school records in the DakotaDome Pool.
Jacob Won, a junior, was the lone double individual winner on the day for the Coyotes, taking first in the 200 free in 1:37.70 and 400 free in 4:14.48. The Katy, Texas, native, also swam the third leg on a victorious 400 free relay, combining with
Zachary Kopp,
Charlie Bean and
Griffin Wolner, for a 3:33.28.
Zachary Kopp won the 50 free in 23.49, Gantenbein won the 100 butterfly in 58.81 and Torborg triumphed in the 100 back in 59.47.
Keegan Henning claimed first in the 800 free in 8:47.09 while Bean won the 100 free in 52.33 and
Parker Sonnabend the 100 breast in 1:07.21.
Hudson Wilkerson won the one-meter diving event with a point total of 266.48 while finishing second in the three-meter event with a 281.25.
The Coyotes took the top three spots in both the 200 free and 400 free, both events won by
Jacob Won. Bean and
Wyatt Thompson followed Won to the wall in 1:58.56 and 1:58.91, respectively in the 200 free while Henning and Thompson were second and third in the 400 free in 4:14.92 and 4:17.65, respectively.
The men's team recorded three other 1-2 finishes during the meet.
Cooper Fuchs was second in the 50 free in 23.66,
Ben Kopp was nosed out by
Brady Torborg in the 100 backstroke by :.08 seconds.
Sydney Fulton, a junior, posted season bests in both diving events, earning her first collegiate victory with a win in the three-meter event (223.95) while she finished second in the one-meter event (209.78).
Leah Drengenberg, a junior, swam to first in the 800 free in 9:33.63.
Emily Johnson posted a pair of runner-up finishes during the meet, touching the wall in 2:11.33 in the 200 free and 1:00.61 in the 100 free.
Lucie Anderson was second in the 100 back in 1:05.69 while
Hannah Aitkin took second in the 400 free in 4:42.51.
Cassie Ketterling posted a runner-up performance in the 200 IM in 2:28.74.
