Tolan, Hicks lead the Yotes after two rounds at Summit Championships

NEWTON, Kan. – The South Dakota men's golf team cut off five strokes from day one of the Summit League Championships to sit in fourth place after two rounds at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course Sunday. Senior Matt Tolan and junior Ben Hicks are part of a three-way tie for fifth place heading into the final round Monday.
 
After shooting an opening round of 72, Tolan carded a 73 Sunday. Tolan started off round two with two straight birdies followed by seven straight pars to sit at 2-under after nine holes and after two rounds has a score of 145. Fellow teammate Hicks also sits in fifth place after recording even par after 18 holes Sunday. Hicks used a birdie on 16 to draw even on the day after hovering around 1-over most of the round.
 
Sophomore Ian Johnston heads into the final round tied for 11th place after carding a 74 on day two. Johnston has a two-round score of 147 and finished day two off strong recording two birdies and four pars on the final six holes.
 
Rounding out the field for USD was senior Tate Arends and junior Justin Kolb. Arends improved his day one score by six strokes to jump to 27th place. Arends used three birdies to card a 1-over 73 for a two-day score of 152. Kolb recorded a 5-over 77 on Sunday and sunk all pars on the back nine except for one. Kolb has a two-round score of 156 and sits in 34th place heading into the final round.
 
As a team, South Dakota shot a round two score of 292 to sit five strokes back from third place North Dakota State, seven back from Oral Roberts and 16 strokes back from the leader in Denver.

ROUND THREE
The third round is set to begin Monday at 8 a.m. Kolb is set to tee off at 8:50, Arends at 9, Johnston at 9:10, Hicks at 9:20 and Tolan at 9:30. Top five get a spot on the all-tournament team.
