The Coyotes
A trio of fifth-year seniors are joined by two redshirt-freshmen at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Â
Senior
Zack Anderson is tied for sixth in the men's high jump with a personal best of 7-5 (2.26m) from the South Dakota Challenge in April. He punched his ticket with a clearance of 7-2 ¼ (2.19m) at the NCAA West Preliminary two weeks ago, the second-highest competition in NCAA West history. Anderson won his eighth Summit League crown in May at Lillibridge Track Complex. The three-time All-American will make his third appearance at an NCAA Outdoor Championship meet.
Â
Senior
Helen Falda and redshirt-freshman
Gen Hirata are both ranked in the top-10 of the women's pole vault. Falda sits sixth in the field with her career-best mark of 14-6 (4.42m) from the Sioux City Relays in April. Hirata ranks 10th with her outdoor-best height of 14-2 (4.32m) that she's vaulted twice – at the Sioux City Relays and again to win the Summit League Championships. Both cleared 14-0 (4.27m) at the NCAA West Preliminary to advance to Eugene. Falda is a six-time All-American, while Hirata earned her first All-America honor with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA's indoor meet in March.
Â
Senior
Ethan Bray and redshirt-freshman
Marshall Faurot both qualified in the men's pole vault with makes of 17-10 ½ (5.45m) at the NCAA West Preliminary. Bray is tied for seventh in the nation with his outdoor best height of 18-4 ¾ (5.61m) from the USD Early Bird in April. Faurot cleared three consecutive personal best bars at the preliminaries, with the final height of 17-10 ½ (5.45m) at the meet tying him for 16th nationally. Bray is a two-time All-American indoors, while Faurot will be making his NCAA Championships debut.
Â
One Last Thing
The Coyote men fell to 10 spots outside of the USTFCCCA's Top 25 entering the national meet, in part due to freshman
Eerik Haamer (pole vault) and redshirt-freshman
Brithton Senior not advancing. USD spent much of the 2021 outdoor season ranked in the top-25. A finish amongst the top eight in each event scores points for South Dakota in the team race.
