Coyotes Travel to Twin Cities for Saturday Night Battle

The Game
South Dakota continues its three-game road trip in the Twin Cities as they get set for a Saturday night tilt against St. Thomas. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.

There is a free stream available on TommieSports.com for fans to watch. Fans can also tune into the game on The Coyote Sports Network with John Thayer on KVHT 106.3 FM in Yankton/Vermillion or by using The Varsity Network app.

The Series
This is the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools. USD has won all three previous matchups. The last meeting sparked a quick three-game win streak for South Dakota as they went on to score 94 points in a win over St. Thomas. The Coyotes went 14-of-20 from the three-point line in the last game, marking the second-highest three-point percentage in a game in team history. The 94 points scored was the most points USD has scored against a Division I opponent this season. Tasos Kamateros netted a season-high 21 points in that game followed by double-digit efforts from Kruz Perrott-Hunt (19), A.J. Plitzuweit (17), Paul Bruns (15), and Damani Hayes (11). Hayes recorded a double-double in that game with 11 rebounds to go along his 11 points scored.

The Coyotes
The Coyotes head into this game off a heartbreaking loss to Western Illinois Thursday night. USD and WIU were tied with 30 seconds to go and possession in the hands of South Dakota. The Coyotes missed their shot on their offensive end and left plenty of time for Trenton Massner to walk the ball up the court and drain a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Leathernecks the win. Kamateros led the offensive effort on Thursday with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Mason Archambault posted his second-highest scoring outing of the season with 16 points while 14 points from Perrott-Hunt rounded out the double-digit efforts.

Perrott-Hunt ranks sixth in the Summit in scoring at 18.3 points per game since conference play began. He also owns the eighth-best field goal percentage in conference-only games at 45.4 percent. Perrott-Hunt is the Summit's second-best free-throw shooter in conference play with a 91.3 percent conversion percentage.

The Tommies
St. Thomas had recently been on a three-game losing streak before they picked up what some are calling its biggest win in the Division I era Thursday night. The Tommies snapped the losing streak in a big way with a 60-54 win over South Dakota State in St. Paul. It was the second-fewest points scored for the Jacks this season and the fewest points the Tommies had allowed all season. UST used a late push and sank 11 free-throws on the night to close out the win over SDSU. St. Thomas did not necessarily shoot the ball extremely well during the game as they shot 37 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three but managed to protect their home court and squeak out a big win for Johnny Tauer's program. After Thursday's win, the Tommies are now a perfect 10-0 at home this year.

Parker Bjorklund was held to four points in the game against South Dakota State, but freshman Andrew Rohde led the team with 15 points on 50 percent shooting. Rohde has taken over the team-lead in scoring at 15 points a game while Bjorklund averages 13.3 points per game. Riley Miller is the third Tommie averaging double-figures at 13 points per game.

One Last Thing
A fast start for South Dakota on Saturday could help turn the momentum around. On Thursday, the Leathernecks managed to make five of their first six baskets and built an early eight-point lead. South Dakota crawled back into it and went into the half down by four after Perrott-Hunt sank a half-court heave at the buzzer. It was the 14th time this season that USD has gone into the locker room behind on the scoreboard. They have gone 3-11 in those games. The Coyotes have had a halftime lead in seven games this season and have gone on to win six times.
