The Series
Saturday's game will be the 25th game in series history between South Dakota and Denver. The Pioneers won their ninth game in the series after defeating USD 75-60 in Vermillion nearly a month ago. The Coyotes have won five of the eight meetings in Denver.
In the previous meeting, Denver had a hot shooting night while South Dakota was cold from the field. DU shot 57 percent from the floor and 56 percent from three in that game while USD was held to 37.7 percent shooting and 27.6 percent from the three. South Dakota's loss to Denver a month ago at home broke a nine-game losing skid to USD for Denver. South Dakota had also won 13 of the last 14 meetings before the game on Jan. 19. The last time Denver has defeated South Dakota in Denver came in the 2018 season. USD lost 68-84 in that game. Saturday's game will be the second time in the last six meetings these two teams will meet in Denver.
The Coyotes
USD dropped its third straight game with a 72-80 loss to Omaha Thursday night in Omaha. Four Coyotes scored in double-figures for the second-straight game at Omaha.
Kruz Perrott-Hunt scored a team-high 16 points while
Tasos Kamateros,
A.J. Plitzuweit, and
Max Burchill had 12 points each. Burchill came off the bench and had a perfect day shooting. Burchill went 4-of-4 from the field including two three-pointers. He also made both of his free-throw attempts. Burchill added four assists and one steal to his stat line. He set a new career-high with 12 points on the night.
It's the last road game for South Dakota this season. The road has not been great to USD this season as they are 2-10 on road games this season. The Coyotes average 60.9 points and allow 75.1 points in road contests. They also shoot just over 40 percent from the floor and opponents shoot 45.8 percent from the field.
The Pioneers
Since the win over South Dakota, it's been a tough stretch for the Pioneers. Denver has lost seven of its last eight games heading into Saturday's contest. DU's one win in this stretch was in convincing fashion as they beat Western Illinois by 30 points at home. The Pioneers have lost four straight games as they enter the game against South Dakota 13-16 and 4-12 in Summit League play. These two teams could meet again in the first round of the Summit League Tournament in two weeks.
Tommy Bruner remains Denver's leading scorer at 16.2 points per game and the team-leader in assists at 4.2 assists per game. Bruner ranks seventh in the conference in points per game and second in assists. He had 13 points in the previous meeting against South Dakota. Tevin Smith and Touko Tainamo are tied for the second-most points on the team at 10.6 points per game. Smith scored a game-high 20 points against USD in Vermillion while Tainamo had eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Marko Lukic had 15 points off the bench as Denver's second-leading scorer in that game. Tyree Corbett is the fourth Pioneer averaging double-figures at 10.1 points per game and averages 8.3 rebounds per game which ranks second in the Summit League. As a team, Denver owns the second-best field goal percentage in the conference at a 48.4 percent clip.
