SACRAMENTO, Calif.—South Dakota fourth-year junior
Marshall Faurot took 20th in the pole vault to highlight day one performances at the NCAA West Preliminary inside Hornet Stadium.
Faurot recorded a second-attempt make of 17-0 ¾ (5.20m) that placed him in a tie for 20th place in the men's pole vault. Junior
Eerik Haamer also competed in the men's pole vault on Wednesday.
Fifth-year senior
Merga Gemeda, who was a late addition after a medical scratch earned him the last spot in the field, placed 24th in the 10,000 meters. After sitting within just three seconds of the leader more than halfway through the race, he went on to clock 29:06.67. The time is just eight seconds off his own school record pace. Gemeda was the top Summit League finisher in the race.
Senior
Hugo Morvan followed up his Summit League title with a 27th-place finish at the NCAA West Preliminary. He clocked 14.00 seconds, just two hundredths of a second out of qualifying for Friday's quarterfinal race. Morvan was the top Summit athlete at the preliminary, finishing one spot ahead of Summit runner-up Pierre Lear of SDSU.
The Coyote women get underway at the NCAA West Preliminary tomorrow, beginning at noon (Central) with the women's hammer throw.
