PREVIEW: South Dakota heads to Iowa City Tuesday for meeting with Hawkeyes

VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota men's basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Iowa City, Iowa Tuesday for a meeting with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Quick Hitters
  • South Dakota earned its third double-digit win of the week Sunday afternoon, 77-47 over Mount Marty in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The Coyotes will now hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Iowa City, Iowa to face the Hawkeyes Tuesday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
  • Through two games, the Coyotes have spread the wealth offensively with four players averaging 10 or more points per game, and seven averaging over 7.0 per game.
  • Chase Forte leads the Yotes at 14.7 points per game and had a season-best 23 points in the Yotes win over Texas A&M-Commerce. Forte is all over the court for the Yotes, as he also averages 3.7 assists, 2.7 steals, 2.3 rebounds and holds a .500 field goal percentage.
  • Isaac Bruns (12.0), Paul Bruns (10.7) and Dre Bullock (10.7) also average double-figure scoring.
  • Bullock and Isaac Bruns have scored in double-figures in all three games to begin the year.
  • The Coyotes have had a different leading scorer in all three games.
  • The last time the Coyotes won their first three games of the season was the 2019-20 campaign, when they won the first five games.
  • Through the first week of games, the Yotes ranked first among Summit League teams and No. 29 in the NCAA in bench points per game at 41.3.
  • Across the NCAA, they rank No. 14 in free throws attempted per game (33.0), No. 23 in free throws made per game (22.7) and No. 34 in turnovers forced per game (18.7).
  • Chase Forte has earned plenty of trips to the charity stripe early in the season and is tied for the NCAA lead in free throws attempted (28) and No. 10 in free throws made (19).
  • Forte ranks No. 11 in the nation in steals (8), while Dre Bullock is No. 24 (7).
  • Paul Bruns holds a 9.0 assist-to-turnover ratio, which leads all Summit League players and is No. 17 in the NCAA.
     
Series History vs. Iowa
  • The Hawkeyes are 12-0 all-time against the Coyotes.
  • The two teams last met in the NIT in the 2016-17 season with Iowa earning an 87-75 victory over the Yotes in Iowa City.
     
Options on Offense
  • The Coyotes have had a different leading scorer in each of the first three games of the season.
  • Four Yotes averaged double-digit point totals and nine score over 5.3 points per game.
  • Paul Bruns paced the Yotes in the season-opener with 14 points, one of five Coyotes in double-figures.
  • Chase Forte poured in 23 in the win over Texas A&M-Commerce, a game where six Yotes scored 10+ points.
  • In the most recent win over the Lancers, Shey Eberwein totaled a career-high 15 points with three treys in 21 minutes off the bench.
  • Two of the Coyotes top four leading scorers, Isaac Bruns (12.0 ppg) and Dre Bullock (10.7 ppg) come off the bench for head coach Eric Peterson's squad.

Lights Out on the Road
  • Road venues didn't intimidate the Coyote sharpshooters a season ago, as USD knocked down 103 treys in 14 road contests with a .386 3-point percentage on the road.
  • The Yotes ranked No. 2 in the NCAA in road 3-point shooting (.386%).
  • Kaleb Stewart was especially lethal from range on the road with 34 triples on a .472 conversion rate.

Bench Mob
  • South Dakota went 11 deep in the season-opening win and received over half of its point total from the bench mob.
  • Through three games, the Coyotes have received 41.3 points from the bench unit, a mark that ranks No. 29 in the NCAA.
  • Off the bench, Isaac Bruns and Dre Bullock have scored in double-figures in all three games.
  • Bullock has notched 2+ steals in all three games.

Everyone Scores!
  • The Coyotes went 11 players deep in each of their first two games to start the season.
  • In the win over Texas A&M-Commerce, six Coyotes reach double-figure scoring, led by Chase Forte's 23 points.
  • It was Forte's first game leading the Yotes in scoring, and was just two points shy of a career high.
  • His career-high of 25 points was set last season, against Texas A&M-Commerce.
  • Forte knocked down a career-best 13 free throws on 16 attempts against TAMC
  • He also added four boards, four assists and a pair of steals.
  • Cameron Fens added a career-high 14 points, his first game in double-digits this season, on 6-of-10 shooting with five rebounds.
  • Isaac Bruns (13), Dre Bullock (11), Kaleb Stewart (10) and Paul Bruns (10) also reach double-digits against the Lions.
  • Eight Coyotes connected on over .500 percent of their field goal attempts in the season opener against Southern.
  • Five Yotes reached double-digit scoring against Southern, led by Paul Bruns' 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting with three treys.
 
Second Half Outburst
  • The South Dakota offense exploded for 59 second half points against Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night in the SCSC.
  • Chase Forte paved the way with 16 of his 23 points in the second half against the Lions.
  • The Coyotes point guard went 3-of-5 from the field, 10-11 from the charity stripe, dished out three assists and two boards in the final 20 minutes of play.
  • Isaac Bruns Chipped in 11 second half points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Paul Bruns grabbed all seven of his game-high rebounding total in the final 20 minutes.
  • After shooting .333 percent from the field in the first half, the Yotes offense found its rhythm in the second half, connecting on 19-of-33 attempts (.576 %) and went 19-for-23 from the free throw line.



Coyote Debuts
  • Five Coyotes made their debuts in the red and white in transfers Chase Forte, Dre Bullock, Cameron Fens, Ashton Smith and redshirt freshman Shey Eberwein.
  • Forte did a little bit of everything on both side of the ball, pouring in 13 points to go with six assists, four steals and two rebounds.
  • In addition to a monster dunk, Bullock reached double-digit scoring with 11 points and had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Fens tallied eight points, three boards and rejected a pair of Jaguar shots.
  • In 17 minutes off the bench, Smith scored nine points and grabbed four boards.
  • Eberwein scored one point and handed out an assist in 11 minutes.
 
Defensive Pressure
  • Behind a full court press, the Coyotes came away with 10 steals, led by Chase Forte's four, on 17 Southern turnovers.
  • It was the first game with 10+ steals as a team since 2/18/23 when the Yotes had 10 steals at Denver.
  • The Coyotes have forced on average 18.7 turnovers per game and hold a +4.7 margin in TOs.
  • Chase Forte's eight steals ranks No. 11 in the NCAA.
 
Dialing It In From Deep
  • The Coyotes have been among the NCAA's best in three-point shooting over the previous five seasons.
  • The Yotes have connected on .373 percent or higher on three-point attempts in each of the last five seasons.
  • The Coyotes converted .376 percent of their attempts from deep a season ago, good for 16th across the NCAA.
  • USD ranked No. 4 in three-pointer percentage 2019-20 with a .388 clip.
  • Kaleb Stewart led the team in 3-pointers a season ago with 66 on a .426 percentage.
  • Paul Bruns followed Stewart with 59 triples of his own a season ago and begins the season with 170 in his career.
  • Isaac Bruns and Max Burchill knocked down 32 and 31 treys, respectively.
  • The high-flying transfer, Dre Bullock, can also knock it down from deep as he connected on 38 treys last season at Niagara with a .500 percentage.
