Hirata ties for fourth in the nation with vault at Texas Relays

Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas—South Dakota fifth-year senior Gen Hirata vaulted the fourth-best mark in the nation in the women's pole vault at the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday inside Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Hirata cleared the 14-1 ¼ (4.30m) bar on a third-attempt make to place fifth in the Texas Relays' university elite women's pole vault section. She cleared the same bar as the second through fourth-place finishers in the competition. Hirata's height ties for fourth in the nation this outdoor season.

The quartet of senior Erin Kinney, senior Jacy Pulse, junior Averi Schmeichel and redshirt-junior Sara Reifenrath narrowly missed the South Dakota program record in the 4x100-meter relay. The Coyotes clocked 44.68 seconds for sixth place in the Carlette Guidry 4x100-meter final. USD was five-hundredths of a second off the record set in 2023.

Fifth-year senior Marshall Faurot opened his outdoor season with a seventh-place finish in the university elite men's pole vault section at the Texas Relays. He vaulted 17-2 ¾ (5.25m) in the competition.

The Coyotes also qualified for the Sanya Richards-Ross Invitational 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Reifenrath, Pulse, Kinney and junior Anna Robinson took eighth in the race with a time of 3:47.08.
