VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota women's basketball coach
Kayla Karius has announced the addition of junior college transfer Madison Hillman. She will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Coyotes.
Hillman spent her freshman season at North Iowa Area Community College where she was selected as a first team all-conference pick and the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. She was also a first-team all-region selection.
"Madison is a post who brings great size, rebounding, and the ability to score in a variety of ways," said Karius. "We are excited to welcome Madison and the Hillman family to our Coyote family.
Hillman averaged 13.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game for the Trojans. She had a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks against Black Hawk College to go along with eight double-doubles during the season. She put up a career high night of 35 points and 20 rebounds against an Iowa Western squad that finished sixth at the NJCAA Division II Tournament. She totaled 408 points, 252 rebounds and 73 blocks in her first collegiate season. She was a four-time conference player of the week honoree and was the national player of the week following her Iowa Western performance.
A 6-foot-2 forward from St. Ansgar, Iowa, Hillman was a three-time all-conference performer who surpassed more than 1,100 points and 800 rebounds. She averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks per game as a senior. Hillman graduated from St. Ansgar High School with program records for career rebounds, rebounds in a season, rebounds in a game and points in a game. She was also an all-conference performer on the volleyball court and a conference champion thrower in the shot put and discus, taking third in the discus at the Iowa State Track and Field Championships.
An academic all-state honoree in high school, Hillman plans to major in health sciences at South Dakota.
