TRUJILLO, Puerto Rico – South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving team took part in a competitive meet while on its winter break training trip in Puerto Rico.
The Coyotes were one of 10 teams to compete in the 20th Copa Coqui at the Encantada Sports Complex, which houses a 10-lane, 50-meter pool.
South Dakota came away with nine individual top 10 finishes, while both teams finished in third place in the scored abbreviated meet that saw only four individual events contested for both the men and women along with the 200 free relay.
Jacob Carlson posted a pair of top 10 finishes while other Coyotes to place in the top 10 included
Gabbie Ahrendt,
Emily DiProspero,
Nick Rounds,
Adam Fisher,
Mairead Powers,
Carson White and
Emily Kahn.
Each individual athlete was only allowed to compete in two individual events during the abbreviated meet.
Carlson, a fifth-year senior, placed fifth in the 100 free in 54.03 and sixth in the 100 back in 1:01.36.
The 100 back event accounted for five of the nine top 10 finishes in the meet for the Coyotes as Rounds, a freshman, was fifth in 1:01.33 and Fisher, a senior, ninth in 1:02.94 for the men while Powers, a senior, was eighth in 1:11.72 and White, a junior, was 10th in 1:12.17 for the women's team.
Ahrendt, a sophomore, was seventh in the 100 fly in 1:06.95 while DiProspero, a freshman, finished ninth in 1:07.43. Kahn, a senior, placed ninth in the 100 free in 1:01.58.
South Dakota women had three teams place in the top ten in the 200 free relay while the men had two.
Carlson, Fisher,
Matthew Sorbe and Rounds teamed for a 1:37.95 clocking to place fourth while the foursome of
Parker Sonnabend,
Grant Wolner,
Jordan Hogue and
David Mayer was ninth in 1:40.99.
The women's quartet of Kahn,
Skyler Leverenz,
Christina Spomer and White was fifth in 1:55.51 while the foursome of Ahrendt,
Anna Balfanz,
Sara Mayer and
Madilyn Gehrke finished sixth in 1:55.75 and finishing eighth in 1:57.67 was the team of
Grace Schultz,
Chloe Miller,
Madeline Schrank and
Abby Wilcox.
The Coyotes will return to the pool next on Jan. 18 with a trip up North to face rival South Dakota State.
