South Dakota distance medley records fall at Drake Relays Saturday

DES MOINES, Iowa – South Dakota Track and Field's distance program continues to rewrite the record books this spring, as both distance medley records fall on the final day of the Drake Relays.
 
The women's squad of Abrielle Jirele, Jade Ecoffey, Sydney Stodden, and Berkeley Engelland ran 11:40.66 to break the program record, set in 2017, by just .02 seconds.
 
Immediately following the women's record-breaking race, the men took to the Blue Oval in Des Moines, and broke a record three of the four runners had set at the start of the outdoor season. Mason Sindelar, Tommy Hensley, and Caleb Rivera were joined this time by Evan Janzen, and ran 9:37.21 to break the school record time of 9:46.63 set almost a month ago.
 
Relays dominated action for the Yotes on Saturday. The Coyote men competed in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdles race Saturday, running 58.15 seconds to place third. The South Dakota men's sprint medley ran 3:23.86 for fifth place, running the eighth quickest time in South Dakota history.
 
In the 4x400-meters to conclude action on the track, South Dakota's women's 4x400 placed sixth in the Invitational section with a time of 3:42.32. The men's squad, running in the University division, placed third with a season's best time of 3:14.59.
 
Individually on the track, Three Coyote hurdlers and one sprinter competed in finals. Averi Schmeichel ran in the women's 100-meter hurdle finals, crossing the line seventh in a time of 13.75. In the men's 110 hurdle race, Jaden Damiano placed fifth in 14.06 seconds and Mikael Grace sixth in 14.37. The lone sprinter competing individually was Jaden Guthmiller, who took sixth with a final of 10.79 seconds.
 
South Dakota also had a handful of athletes competing in field events. Highlighting the throws was a personal best throw of 187-5 (57.14m) in the hammer throw from Delaney Smith, who placed fifth in the event. Lydia Knapp competed in the Championship division of the hammer throw, recording a fifth-place finish with a throw of 207-9 (63.32m). South Dakota's Quincy Warren took sixth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 193-4 (58.93m).
 
Three Coyotes competed in the men's long jump competition, highlighted by Bennett Schwenn's 23-0 (7.01m) jump to place seventh in the championship section. Jayden Green took 11th in the long jump University/College section with a mark of 22-7 ¾ (6.90m) and Carsen Staehr jumped 21-1 ½ (6.44m) in the event.
 
In the women's high jump, Danii Anglin took fifth at 5-8 ¾ (1.75m) and Maddie Olson sixth at 5-7 ¼ (1.71m).
 
Saturday was the men's turn at the pole vault competition. In the Championship section, Spencer Buley cleared 16-11 ½ (5.17m) and Wyatt Stewart 16-5 ½ (5.02m) to place sixth and seventh. Dylan Curtis cleared 15-11 ¾ (4.87m) to lead Coyotes in the University/College division, followed by Beau Karst at 15-5 ¾ (4.72m) and Owen Spartz at 15-0 (4.57m).
