Baseball Team Drops Extra-Inning Affair To Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. - Wayne State scored on a South Dakota throwing error and defeated the Coyotes, 7-6, in 10 innings in nonconference baseball on Tuesday afternoon at Wayne, Neb. South Dakota dropped to 18-15 on the season while Wayne State improved to 26-5. The Coyotes will host Morningside on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader at Prentis Park beginning at 1:30 p.m.

With two out in the 10th inning, Wayne State's Joey Baldwin walked and Joel Tremblay singled. Pinchhitter Tim Richt singled and Baldwin scored on a throwing error by South Dakota's Dustin Moore.

Patrick Coghlan picked up the win for Wayne State, limiting the Coyotes to three hits over the final three innings. Aaron Hyde went four innings for Wayne State before being relieved by Tony Manganero. Courie Weber replaced Manganaro in the eight-inning and allowed three hits and four runs. Rob Miller took the loss for South Dakota. He went 1 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run. Craig Harris started for the Coyotes and allowed three hits and four runs. John Brunswold entered the game in the fourth for the Coyotes and he allowed five hits and two runs but recorded 12 strikeouts. Offensively for South Dakota, Rob Heisel had two hits, including a double and two RBI while Dustin Moore had a pair of hits and a RBI. John Quade had three hits and Bryan Hohenthaner had two hits, including a double, and a RBI.

South Dakota took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Heisel hit a RBI single after Derek Huxford walked and Eric Archer was hit by a pitch. Wayne State tied the game in the bottom of the second when Brian Zimmerman walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Zimmerman advanced to third on a fly out and then scored on a ground out by Andy Schultz.

The Wildcats added three runs in the third inning to grab a 4-1 lead. Baldwin singled and was sacrificed to second. After a ground out, Baldwin advanced to third on a balk. David Muryn walked as did Zimmerman and Eric Fitch hit a three-run double.

Wayne State moved the advantage to 5-1 by scoring a run in the fourth inning. With one out, Gary Redden was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Baldwin. Then, Tremblay and Rob Watt were both hit by a pitch in consecutive at bats which forced Redden home.

South Dakota cut into the lead by scoring in the top of the fifth inning. Dunlap singled and moved to third on a double by Hohenthaner. After Moore struck out, Huxford reached on a fielder's choice with Dunlap out at home. Archer was hit by a pitch and Heisel walked which brought home Hohenthaner.

The Wildcats scored again in the home half of the fifth inning. Fitch doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Joe Hartman's RBI single and Wayne State had a 6-2 lead.

That was all the scoring until the Coyotes tied the game with a four-run eighth inning. Chris Laws led off and reached first base when he was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a single by Todd Dekkers. A single by Quade loaded the bases with nobody out. Dunlap singled to score Laws. Then Hohenthaner walked which brought home Dekkers. Moore hit into a double play which allowed pinch runner Karl Miller to score. Huxford followed with a single to score Dunlap and tie the game.
