BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota baseball team (24-26, 11-17 NCC) closed out its season with doubleheader split against South Dakota State Saturday in Brookings, S.D. The Coyotes grabbed a 4-3 win in game one, but dropped an 11-9 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, senior Bryan Hohenthaner hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie. It was Hohenthaner's seventh homer of the season.
Senior left-hander Matt Huggett upped his record to 5-2, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on just two hits, while striking out six. Junior Brian Kungl hurled a scoreless seventh to pick up his seventh save of the season.
Junior Robin Chute went 4-for-4 at the plate in the opener with an RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, the game was tied at 9-9 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but SDSU scored a pair of runs off of Kungl in the sixth to secure the victory. Kungl's record dropped to 3-8 on the season.
At the plate, sophomore T.J. Schmidtke went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Hohenthaner was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Chute went 2-for-5 with a solo home run (6). Junior Chris Fielder drove in three runs, while junior Vincent Flores drove in two.
