BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The South Dakota baseball team (23-25, 10-16 NCC) split a doubleheader with South Dakota State Friday in Brookings, S.D. The Jacks took game one 17-0, but the Coyotes rebounded to take the nightcap, 6-5.
The win for USD in game two snapped a nine-game losing streak.
In game one, SDSU used a 12-run fourth inning to take control of the game, while the Coyotes managed just three hits in the game. Taking the loss for South Dakota was freshman Josh Lundin, who fell to 4-5 on the season.
In the nightcap, USD trailed 5-3 with two outs in the top of the seventh, but rallied with three runs to secure the victory.
Junior Justin Carey recorded the win to improve to 5-3, while Brian Kungl picked up his sixth save of the season.
At the plate, senior Bryan Hohenthaner drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single to center field. Junior Vincent Flores was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore T.J. Schmidtke also was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The same two teams will close out the season Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
