PRENTIS PARK, VERMILLION, S.D. -- The South Dakota baseball team (11-5) exploded for nine second inning runs in a 11-7 nonconference win over Mount Marty (8-8) on Thursday at Prentis Park in Vermillion, S.D.
In the decisive second inning, the Coyotes scored nine runs on six hits and were aided by a Mount Marty error. Casey Baker (Sioux City, Iowa) had a RBI double and Rob Heisel (Melbourne, Fla.) had a two-run double to key the inning. The Coyotes added another run in the third inning on Heisel's second RBI double of the game, scoring Dustin Moore (South Sioux City, Neb.). The Coyotes also scored a single run in the seventh on a RBI single by reserve catcher Wes Demke who knocked in Moore.
Junior pitcher John Brunswold (Apple Valley, Minn.) picked up his fourth win in five decisions this season. In five innings of work, he allowed just three hits and one unearned run with six strikeouts and three walks. Justin Thede took the loss for Mount Marty, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in three innings of work. He had six walks. Jeff Puthoff took over mound duties for Mount Marty in the fourth inning and limited the Coyotes to four hits and one run in five innings.
South Dakota first baseman Rob Heisel led the Coyotes' hitting attack with two hits in four trips and three RBI. He had a pair of doubles. Horace Lawrence (San Francisco, Calif.) added two hits in three at bats while center fielder Bryan Hohenthaner (Sioux Falls, S.D.) also had two hits.
South Dakota totaled 11 runs on 14 hits and three errors while Mount Marty had seven run on nine hits and two errors.
The Lancers scored a single run in the fifth and then scored twice in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Heath Hagge had two hits while Jesse Kurtenbach had a two-run double and three RBI on the day.
After Brunswold left the game after five innings, four Coyote pitchers finished the game. Steve Kinsland (Monroe, Mich.), Don Mendel (New Brighton, Minn.), Brian Markel (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Luke Branch (Huntington Beach, Calif.)each worked one inning.
South Dakota will now host Northland College of Ashland, Wisc., on Friday in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
