The two wins marked the 2008-09 home opener for USD (8-7).

Against Northern, the Coyotes (7-7) won all the singles play matches and rolled to wins in double competition as well.

"We played well today," USD head coach Malcolm Gilreath said. "The weather was perfect for tennis."

USD's Shadi Soleymani (Fr., New York, Ontario, Canada) earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. Rijalda Zejnic (Jr. Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) added a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles for the Coyotes. Isabel Nunez (Fr., Oakville, Ontario, Canada), Janea Hagen (So., Bellevue, Neb.), Ashley Waltman (Sr., Rapid City, S.D.), and Melanie Rockne (Jr., Yankton, S.D.) also won in singles for the Coyotes.

"Getting outside on our spring break trip to Orlando really paid off," Gilreath said.

USD had similar success against Morningside. Soleymani and Zejnic rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, with Waltman and Nunez winning 8-0 at No. 2. At No.3 doubles, Rockne and Hagen teamed up for an 8-3 win.

USD won five of the six singles matches, with Soleymani, Zejnic, Nunez, Hagen and Rockne earning straight-set wins.

The Coyotes resume action at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
