VERMILLION, S.D. - The White scored earned a 143.5-139.5 win over the Red in the South Dakota Track and Field's Red vs. White Intersquad, which was held Thursday at the DakotaDome. Both teams captured 14 event wins on the day. The White edged the Red on the men's side (75-70), while the Red narrowly topped the White in the women's competition (69.5-68.5).
The White was led by sophomore Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.), who won the men's 3,000 meters at 8:37.79 and the men's 1-mile run at 4:27.67. Junior Ashley Sveum (Eau Claire, Wis.) won the women's 400 meters (59.97) while junior Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.) captured the women' 60-meter hurdles. Sveum and Duling were also part of the winning women's 4 x 400 relay, which included freshman J'Myah White (North Las Vegas, Nev.) and sophomore Anna Hyronimus (Brandon, S.D.). That relay posted a winning time of 4:04.36. Freshman Kyle McKelvey (Beresford, Minn.) also had an impressive showing, winning the men's shot put at 54-8 -- the best throw in the Summit League so far this season and not far from South Dakota's school indoor record of 56-1. Freshman Kaitlin Petrillose (Austin, Texas) also made an impressive debut, winning the women's pole vault at 13-0.
The Red had three multi-event winners, led by freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.). Huschle won three women's events, including the high jump at 5-4 1/4, the long jump at 17-8 3/4 and the triple jump at 36-11. Junior Carol Miller (Mead, Neb.) added a pair of wins, capturing the women's 3,000 meters (10:43.52) and the women's 1-mile (5:25.25). Senior Jared Clement (Le Mars, Iowa) won two events for the Red. He captured the men's 60 meters at 7.05 and added a win in the men's 200 at 22.89. Clement was also part of the winning 4 x 400 relay.
South Dakota's teams open the 2012 regular season on Jan. 14 at home with the annual Alumni Meet.
