Kenna Wolter won the triple jump and junior
Casey Shade set a new school record in the 600 meters to highlight the final day of competition for the South Dakota track and field teams at Jack Johnson Minnesota Classic Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn. The Coyote women had a solid third-place finish in the event while the men were fifth.
Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) captured the triple jump with an effort of 38-9 (11.81 meters). Freshman teammate Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) was second at 38-2 (11.63). A day earlier, Huschle had edged Wolter to win the long jump.
Junior Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.83. Senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) finished fourth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:33.60 - less than a second away from the winning time. The Coyotes' 4x400 relay was fourth with a season-best time of 3:51.60. That consisted by Duling, freshman Rachel Weinandt (Yankton, S.D.), Ladwig and Amber Ewers (Columbus, Neb.).
For the men, Shade (Hartford, S.D.) ran a time of 1:19.82 to finish second to Minnesota's Harum Abda in the 600-meters. Shade broke a record that had lasted 30 years and was set by Greg Haydenluck in 1982 (1:21.76) to lead the Coyote men, who finished fifth in the team competition.
Senior Chad Pinkelman (Norfolk, Neb.) added a runner-up finish in the triple jump at 44-1 1/2 (13.45 meters). Freshman Kyle McKelvey (Beresford, S.D.) finished a solid fourth in the shot put at 55-0 3/4 (16.78 meters). Freshman Jeff O'Connell (Philip, S.D.) was fourth in the long jump at 21-8 1/4 (6.61 meters). Junior Kyle Ballew (West Hills, Calif.) had a good effort in the pole vault, finishing fifth overall and fourth among the collegiate athletes competing. Ballew cleared a vault of 16-4 3/4 (5.00 meters). Coyote assistant coach Derek Miles, competing for team Nike, had the top mark in the event.
Junior Michael Burrus (Papillion, Neb.) added a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94. Sophomore Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.) ran a personal-best of 4:10.43 to finish sixth in the one-mile run. The Coyotes' 4x400 relay had a solid run, taking fourth with a time of 3:21.70. That consisted by junior Brandon Kovash (Harrisburg, S.D.), freshman Erik Hill (Tea, S.D.), Shade and freshman Lukas Bernard (Watertown, S.D.).
Next action for the Coyote teams is Jan. 28 at the Bill Bergan Invite at Iowa State University.
