VERMILLION, S.D.--South Dakota senior point guard Juevol Myles made his first eight shots from the field in scoring a career-high 26 points in the Coyotes' 88-68 win against IUPUI Saturday night at the DakotaDome. It was Myles' third 20-point effort in his last four games.
John Hart, who transferred to IUPUI after earning a degree from Purdue University, scored a career-best 29 points, but couldn't prevent the Jaguars from falling to 0-2 in the Summit League. IUPUI (3-6, 0-2 Summit) has lost five of its last six overall.
Myles had 19 first-half points in pushing South Dakota (4-4, 1-1 Summit) to a 49-33 halftime lead. Myles was 7-for-7 from the field including two three-pointers and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. He made his first shot of the second half and missed for the first time on a 3-point try with 14 minutes to play.
USD forward Karim Rowson scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half and finished a rebound shy of a double-double. Trevor Gruis added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Coyotes.
Behind Myles, South Dakota shot 70 percent in the first half (17-of-24). The Coyotes maintained at least a 14-point lead throughout the second half. South Dakota won the battle of the boards 42-27 and made more free throws (28) than the Jaguars attempted (7).
The Coyotes went 3-1 during their first home stand of the season. South Dakota hits the road next week for games against Iowa of the Big Ten Tuesday and Ball State Saturday.
USD head coach Dave Boots post-game quotes
On the play of Juevol Myles...
"He had a great half. Everything went in and they were tough shots, they weren't layups or anything. Sometimes he gets too caught up in penetrating and driving, but he's an excellent shooter and I told him today in shoot around to try to focus on just shooting the basketball. Take your perimeter jump shots, take some threes, you'll end up shooting a lot better. He made a pretty nice adjustment."
On Brandon Bos, who scored 16 points off the USD bench...
"We got into foul trouble early with Tyler Flack and we moved Brandon in at 3 and Karim over at 4 and I though Karim did a great job at that 4 spot getting out to their shooters in the corner and then Brandon had a terrific game for us. He played very aggressively. He showed us some things that we see in practice. Now if he could just get consistent with the things we need him to then he will add a lot to us."
On the play of Trevor Gruis...
"I thought this was Trevor's best game. He was active, he went up and rebounded with two hands, he challenged shots and he's a very good passer. We have to continue to do a better job of getting him the ball. We get a little too perimeter oriented sometimes and we forget about what he can bring to the table for us not only as a scorer, but we can feed off of him and it will make our perimeter players better."
On the win...
"This was a good win for us. We played with a lot of energy right out of the game. We were active on offense, active on defense, did a really good job on the boards. Played a little smaller tonight and I think that helped us. We were really quick getting out to close outs and we did a great job on the boards. To out-rebound them 42-27 on the boards, we haven't done that for a long time."
