VERMILLION, S.D.- The South Dakota track and field teams set four school records at the John Dalton Invitational, which was held Friday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. The meet served as the final tune-up for the Coyote teams prior to the Summit League Indoor Championships, which are set for Feb. 24-25 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
For the Coyote men, junior Kyle Ballew (West Hills, Calif.) set a new school record in the pole vault, while sophomore Cody Snyder (Lake Andes, S.D.) set a new school record in the shot put. For the Coyote women, senior Kenna Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) set a new record in the triple jump - for the third straight week - while junior Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.) set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles.
Ballew won the pole vault with an effort of 17-4 1/2 - topping the previous record of 17-1 that Sam Pribyl set in 2006. Ballew's mark is the second-best in the Summit League this season and a personal-best.
Snyder won the shot put with a throw of 57-3, setting a new school record by nearly 11 inches. The throw is the best in the Summit League this season.
Wolter continued her dominance in the triple jump, setting a new school record for the third straight week. Wolter won the event Friday with a jump of 41-5 3/4 -- topping her previous mark by nearly three inches. Friday's jump is the best in the Summit League by more than 15 inches.
Duling broke the school record of 8.78 in the 60-meter hurdles with a winning time of 8.71 during Friday's finals. The time is the fourth-fastest in the Summit League this season.
For the Coyote men, junior Michael Burrus (Papillion, Neb.) won two events, taking the 60-meter dash at 6.94 and the 200-meter dash at 22.26. Sophomore Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.) won the one-mile with a time of 4:12.95.
Freshman Erik Hill (Tea, S.D.) won the 60-meter hurdles at 8.62, while freshman Jeff O'Connell (Philip, S.D.) won the long jump at 22-0 3/4. The Coyotes' 4 x 400 relay also was victorious with a time of 3:26.24.
For the Coyote women, junior Christina Roberts (Omaha, Neb.) earned a pair of wins, claiming the 60-meter dash (7.99 time) and the 200-meter dash (25.83). Senior Natalie Newman (Overland Park, Kan.) won the 800 meters at 2:20.49, while sophomore Ashleigh Giese (Marshall, Wis.) won the 1-mile at 5:07.44.
The Summit League Championships begin Friday, Feb. 24 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
