Buell and Duling Set Records to Lead Coyote Track and Field at Aztec Open

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Juniors Bethany Buell and Alexa Duling each set school records to lead the South Dakota track and field teams at the Aztec Open Friday in San Diego, Calif. The wins by Buell and Duling were among the five wins on the day for the Coyote women, while solid performances from senior Chad Pinkelman and freshman Kyle McKelvey paced the men's team.

Buell (St. Louis, Mo.), who redshirted during the indoor season, picked up where she left off in 2011 when she earned All-American second team honors in the pole vault. She cleared a height of 14-2 1/2 during Friday's competition, breaking the previous record of 13-9 1/4 she set in 2011. Her teammate, freshman Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.), was second at 13-0 1/4.

Duling (Gregory, S.D.) got her outdoor season off to a strong start with a record-setting win in the 400-meter hurdles. Duling ran a time of 1:00.13 to win the event Saturday - edging the previous record she set in 2011 by .02 seconds.

Senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) won the 400 meters with a time of 55.69, while senior Kenna Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) captured the triple jump with an effort of 40-9 1/2. Senior Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) won the hammer throw with an effort of 171-10 and was second in the shot put at 46-8 1/4 in her season debut.

Freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) was fifth in the 200 dash at 24.78.

For the Coyote men, McKelvey (Beresford, S.D.) was third in the open shot put at 55-6 1/4 to lead the way. Pinkelman was third in the long jump at 22-2 1/2, while freshman Jeff O'Connell (Philip, S.D.) was fourth at 21-11 1/2. Freshman Erik Hill (Tea, S.D.) was third in the open 400 meters at 54.06.

Junior Kyle Ballew was third in the invitational pole vault at 16-7 1/4, while sophomore Cody Snyder was fourth in the discus at 168-2.

Sophomore Denton Stephens (Rapid City, S.D.) was fourth in the hammer throw after firing a toss of 164-1. Freshman Lukas Bernard (Watertown, S.D.) was fourth in the 400 meters at 49.45.

Senior Jared Clement (Le Mars, Iowa) was fifth in the 100-meter dash at 11.21.

The Coyotes will compete at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday to conclude the weekend of competition.
