FARGO, N.D. - Sophomore
Bethany Buell set new meet and stadium records in winning the pole vault to help the South Dakota track and field women's track and field team take the lead after the opening day of the Summit League Championships, which are being held at Schlanser Track in Fargo, N.D. The Coyote women lead with 38 points, while the men are sixth after just three completed events.
The Coyote women lead Southern Utah by eight points and North Dakota State by nine with four events in the books.
Buell (St. Louis, Mo.), who now has four conference pole vault championships in her stellar Coyote career, claimed the women's pole vault with a winning height of 14-0 1/2, topping the previous meet record of 13-5 1/4 set by NDSU's Leslie Brost in 2010. Not only was Buell's height a meet record, but it also broke a Schlanser Track record of 13-9 1/4 set by Brost. Buell is the first Coyote to win a Summit League Outdoor Championship.
The Coyotes had a highly-successful women's pole vault event as a team, scoring 22 points with three individuals placing in the top five. In addition to Buell's win, freshman Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.) was second in the pole vault at 13-4 1/2, giving the Coyotes eight valuable team points. Junior Megan Meyer (Bismarck, N.D.) was fifth in the event at 12-6 3/4, scoring four more points for the Coyotes.
Senior Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) was third in the women's hammer throw at 170-8, with senior Darci Schwartz (McCook Lake, S.D.) taking fifth at 164-11. Sophomore Kate Wellensiek (Cook, Neb.) was fourth in the women's javelin at 140-4. Also for the women, junior Jessica Brandli (Rapid City, S.D.) scored points for the Coyotes in the 10,000 meters, taking eighth at 38:05.29, shattering her previous personal best by more than a minute.
For the Coyote men, senior Tyler Maxwell (Tekamah, Neb.) was fifth in the men's javelin throw at 191-2. Junior Ethan Marquardt (Albert Lea, Minn.) was sixth in the 10,000 meters at 32:22.21, with fellow junior Benson Langat (Kapsabet, Kenya) taking eighth at 32:50.08.
